Nothing new about this pathogenic amoeba - as noted, it’s been around for a long time.
While I suppose going from an average of two deaths a year to six in one year is a “spike”, it doesn’t exactly herald End Times. We’ve had a bunch of unusually warm years recently with no jump in cases, but that doesn’t make for a sexy news story.
Knowing about Amoebic Meningitis was part of my childhood, 30 years ago. In the volcanic regions of NZ there are lots of hot pools that we used to swim in. The ones that used water straight out of the ground or had earth bottoms were considered far more risky than filtered concrete lined pools. Most pools now use chlorinated water with heat exchangers - they don’t smell the same, but are safer.
