Just found out that the Bank of Canada unveiled a new $5 bill, in the same series as the new $10 that came out last year. It features winter sports and an excerpt from Roch Carrier’s The Hockey Sweater.
I found this out quite by accident while visiting the Bank’s website, and I’m very annoyed nobody told me this sooner. Hmph.
I just heard this on the radio and it was sort of news to me. Of course, I had heard that they were thinking about a new $5 coin, but nothing much more than that.
Well considering they only unveiled it yesterday you shouldn’t be too hard on yourself. I have to say I like it a lot, and I can’t wait to see what the other ones will look like.
It was in the paper here…made front page even ( that’s how exciting our city is! ) I only happen to even see the paper because I took my daughter to McD’s for breakfast and the guy inline ahead of us had a paper with him…and there it was.
I’m glad it wasn’t a $5 coin! My purse is heavy enough with all my regular junk, toonies and loonies.
I was a bit surprised when I saw the article in the paper as well. After work I went to the bank and traded a twenty for four of them… all shiny and new. Then I went and bought a hamburger…
I suspect that they are going to be taken up more rapidly than the new tens, because the five-dollar note takes a hell of a lot of beating and wears out more quickly than the ten…
But now I can say to people from other countries: our money has our national sport* on it. What does yours have?
*Okay, I know the official national sport of Canada is lacrosse. But I am not an official.
Speaking of astute political compromise, take a new ten and a new five, put them side by side, and compare the order in which French and English are used in the various locations of the notes.
