Good movies starring actors you don't usually take seriously

One of my favorite movies is DESPERATELY SEEING SUSAN, and I have to remember (against my will) that Madonna does a really good turn in it.

SEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKING

Kalifornia made me truly respect him as an actor. The fact that he could make himself so utterly and undeniably unattractive was astounding (not that I’ve got a huge crush on him- not my type- but still).

Many will disagree, but I really liked Madonna, who I usually thought of as (and who usually is) a theatrical lightweight, as Evita. Somehow she took the part of “a bottle-blonde primadonna with a wild past who translates sex appeal and fame into ersatz authority on weighty matters of world and state” and makes it her own.

I’ve always thought of Affleck and Damon as basically self-congratulatory overlauded frat boys, but the last few movies of theirs I’ve seen made me… keep the opinion.

Tony Curtis was great in Some Like it Hot. Almost nothing else, but in that he was good.

I can’t stand Tom Cruise, but I did like him in War of the Worlds. That and Rain Man.

Same with Barbra Streisand, but she was funny in Meet the Fockers.
