Star Wars and Aliens for fucking up Sci Fi movies in general. Now they HAVE to have Splashy special effects and they DON’T need to be thoughtful. Just take a popular style of movie (Action) and “Re invent it” by dumbing it down and spacing it up!

Not to mention Titanic. You don’t need historical characters or accuracy just a love interest as the focus and leave all that depressing stuff surrounding the incident as fancy window dressing. (Hmm that’s twice I hate you Cameron you @#@#@ Hack)
Which movie can we blame the Gross-Out Comedy on? Dumb and Dumber? There’s Something About Mary?
Psycho. It created the slasher film genre (though it took some time to take off after it). Of course, no one ever came close to the Master of Suspense.
Birth of a Nation. The first feature film and – if you can stomach the concept – a very well done movie. But, of course, the racism is blatant and its clear that the stereotypes of Blacks first shown there persisted in Hollywood for decades (some can still be be seen ever today).
Did you actually think Hollywood historical dramas ever had a penchant for accuracy? I hate to disillision you, but “Titanic” was firmly in a long tradition of Hollywood historical dramas, where the story (quite rightly) came first over accuracy.
Borris and Natasha was a really good movie, but I blame it for the surge of cartoon to live action films that popped up later. I like Josie and the Pussycats, but we also had shit like The Flinstones, Rocky and Bullwinkle, and Scoobie Doo. Not good.
And although Dragnet and Car 54 Where Are You came out in the 80’s, I’m going to blame Mission Impossible the the recent surge of movies based off of old television series. Again, I like Charlie’s Angels and even couldn’t help myself from giggling through McHail’s Navy, but there are some shows that should remain in the past as simple television. I’m waiting for the Golden Girls movie to come out.
Personally, I don’t think Star Wars ruined sci-fi. Most sci-fi before that was pretty damn shitty, and it was great in terms of its innovations in special effects. What I do hate is the “Special Addition” release, because that helped spawn other movies to be released with “all new scenes and effects.” E.T. was just fine the way it was, did they really need to take the fucking pistols out of the policemen’s hands?
