I’m finally going with the cable connection at home! Woohoo! We ordered it today and they checked to see if the lines could handle it, and they CAN! So in a few days, I can post from home just as fast as at work.
Woohoo!

So wish is it DSL or Cable? THIS POSTER WANTS TO KNOW!
*which
And I think I figured it out, it’s DSL. Tell me I’m right.
I’d be seriously upset if my home DSL was that slow.
I’m just unhappy that I’m moving now. Current service gets me 6 megabits as I’m less than 5000’ from the wire center. New place is nearly 10,000’ so I’ll probably wind up with 3-4 megabits. Does the monthly rate change? Nope.
Yeah, it’s DSL! And they say it will be hooked up on January 7th.
The only problem I can see with this is I might conceivably be spending more time online. It’s been bad enough since the hamsters got their hands on espresso since the boards move so much faster, but if my connection even is faster…
uh-oh.
We just got hooked up on cable tonight, and boy howdy, what a difference!!!
I think I may actually spend LESS time online, because I don’t have to wait so frickin’ long for the pages to load!
I gave the finger to Adelphia when I moved into the new house a few months ago, and got Dish Network. However, that meant giving up the cable broadband service I was used to, and going with SBC DSL. It’s cheaper than cable broadband, but much slower – about 150 kbps tops compared to 400kbps with cable – and it uses some sort of protocol (PPPoE?) that makes it more difficult to use a router sand hook up multiple computers.
Get a broadband router, such as the Linksys BEFSR41 - it handles PPPoE in hardware and makes sharing the DSL connection trivial. Side benefit is you can remove that Enternet PPPoE software from the computer.
All I know is I lurves my DSL. I could have cable broadband service but Mediacom cable tv sucks so bad and goes out everytime somebody in the neighborhood farts, I don’t trust it. All I know is with BellSouth, the phone works all the time, so with DSL I went. I mean, come on people, can’t you wait a few measly seconds to see that porn you’re downloading?
I went with cable because I can’t wait an extra couple of seconds for porn swampy.
Make sure you have a decent firewall, Anaamika. That always-on connection has drawbacks, in that you’re connected to the big bad world whether or not your browser is open.
I had DSL for about four months at the end of 2003 but then I left home, had to use a really crappy dial-up, moved again but used a really crappy computer on cable, and then moved twice more and am ***still ***using dial-up. After those blissful four months, it’s a constant headache.
I hate all of you.
The Pit is the only place suitable for my current thoughts.
I’m currently stuck with dial-up access only while I’m at home for the holidays. It wasn’t so bad when I was used to it, but after spending a few months with broadband, it’s become painful. Have fun! I know I will when I get back.
