Good place to read about mil. strategies, etc.?

As the title says, does anyone know a good place where I can read about different war strategies&tactics? Modern ones. There’s some stuff on wikipedia, but that is…meh, I tried to look at the field manual and the russian/soviet analogue, which should be the bible of this stuff, but unfortunately nothing is mentioned in either of them about strategies, so wikipedia is pretty much the only place where I found some stuff, but there’s gotta be something better. Youtube videos would also be great if there are any, from videos I found a show called battleplan which is exactly the thing I am looking for, but unfortunately there are very little episodes, around 10 I think.

It really depends on what you are looking for.

You wrote “strategies” in your title for example, but then talked about reading field manuals. You need to understand the difference between tactics and strategy. Tactics is how to fight on the ground, person by person or unit by unit. Strategy is how nations fight and conduct international relations. In between there is theatre or organizational level of warfare.

If you really want strategy, I’d start with the classics including, Sun Tzu, Clausewitz and I’d include Jomini. But you have to know what you’re looking for first.

Keep in mind that there are people that devote their lives to the study of this stuff. So if you really want to understand some of this beyond the “wiki” level as you note, you’ll need some background that the above authors will give you.

Also note that tactics have changed radically over time as they’re closely coupled with the skills of the two sides and the capabilities of their weapons.

Strategy however, is much more timeless. So even the long-ago authors mentioned above are still largely relevant today and will continue to be so in the far future. Certain nooks and crannies of their ideas will have gotten rusty over time, but the core remains valid.

Liddell Hart’s Strategy is a good read - heavily focused on the idea of the indirect attack.

Sun Tzu’s Art of War is a quick and easy read dealing with leadership, formations, spying and when to engage (or not).

Edward Luttwak’s Strategy the Logic of War and Peace focuses on defence in depth (if I remember right) which describes NATO’s planned approach in Europe during the Cold War. he also goes into 5 levels of strategy

Clauswitz’s On War is a classic but I found it tough to read.

You’ll note that these talk about strategy, and in some cases grand strategy, with much less time spent on maneuvers before and during a battle.
