Good Pope/Bad Pope

Well, if you’re married to the person, then it’s not extra-marital.

heh.

You’re both right.

My point with reference to Big Boss’ data is that a country with a 20% Catholic population (thus not making Big Boss’ chart) with a population of, say, 50 million, would still have 10 million Catholics, an awful lot of people being misled, in short. Even if the population is only 5 million, that’s 1 million people being lied to, who are prone to buy the lies. Still sounds Double Plus Ungood to me.

I didn’t understand the “tab” question…

You’ve got some good points… but just seeing the effect of the RCC “directly” as opposed to their effects indirectly seemed wrong to me.

The Health Ministry has basically invested a lot in AIDS prevention education and TV campaigns. Most Catholic Bishops in Brazil are “more liberal” than the regular Vatican people… so few have opposed these campaigns. Still among protestant and catholic fundies we see a lot of anti-condoms BS.

Brazil has carnaval… not using condoms here is suicide
(promoting a wrong stereotype… but fine… hehe)

Ah, sorry… the ‘tab’ thing was meant as a general request for anyone to explain how to format text, not a personal question. (Thanks tomndebb, btw).

More suited for GQ, perhaps, but since this thread is already opened and it’s relevant: When PJP2 referred to gay marriage as part of an “ideology of evil”, was he speaking ex cathedra (i.e. did he have his infallibility hat on)?

FTR, I have extremely mixed reviews of his papacy, but being neither Catholic nor Christian I don’t think I was his target demographic.

No, he wasn’t. In fact, I don’t think that John Paul II ever made an ex cathedra statement.

JP II never made a declaration ex cathedra. In fact, the only two popes who have ever done so were Pius IX (retroactively–that is how we got stuck with the doctrine) and Pius XII.

When John Paul II declared that the discussion regarding women priests was “closed,” Cardinal Ratzinger immediately attempted to declare that statement infallible. JP II had his secretary issue a statement (couched in all the polite diplomatic language that makes it difficult for the outsider to read) that basically told Ratzy that there had been no ex cathedra declaration and that Ratzy should keep his personal wishes out of official pronouncements.

What the Pope actually wanted to say to the good coughcough Cardinal:

(with inadequate apologies to Harnick and Bock)

o/ Ratfinker, Ratfinker, go get kneecapped. You reached too far, gonna get slapped. Ratfinker, Ratfinker, *również zobacz* and cut out the retro crap... o/
