Good song intros, or This song is going to ROCK!

I used to play drums in a band that did some fairly cheesy covers, and I just love the intro to Hard to Handle (Black Crowes style)

I also like the starts of Live Forever and Cigarettes and Alcohol by Oasis.

Symptom of the Universe by Black Sabbath has the most bone crunching opener of any heavy song from the 70’s in my opinion. I always thought it completely rocked and it was a nice touch for them to end the song with a lovely acoustic fade out.

“Willie the Pimp” by Frank Zappa
“Too Much Paranoias” by Devo
“Tomorrow Never Knows” by the Beatles
“Burning of the Midnight Lamp” by Jimi Hendrix

“Bitch” by the Rolling Stones
“Chop Suey” by System of a Down

yup, Gail – “Bitch,” definitely. I’m on the dancefloor by, say, the second repetition.

Angry young man - Billy Joel

Light my fire - The Doors

Question - Moody Blues (I second that)

Foreplay/Long time - Boston (second that too)

Spanish Caravan Live versions - Doors (Robby Krieger does an awesome guitar solo in the live versions)

cherub rock, I am one - smashing pumpkins

dead leaves and the dirty ground - the white stripes

organ donar - dj shadow

it was there that I saw you - …and you will know us by the trail of dead

smile - elastica

what’s the (morning glory)? - oasis

take it easy chicken - mansun

i get along - the libertines

the drama you’ve been craving - sleater - kinney

and a great big second for paradise city

The Kinks’

‘You Really Got Me’
‘Tired of Waiting’
‘I’m Not Like Everybody Else’
‘You’re Looking Fine’
‘See My Friends’ (esp Dave’s live arrangement)
‘Waterloo Sunset’
‘Lola’

“Sweet Emotions” - Aerosmith

MtM

“Would?” by Alice In Chains
“You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC
“Rearviewmirror” by Pearl Jam
“Blitzkreig Bop” and “I Wanna Be Sedated” by the Ramones
“Start Me Up” by the Rolling Stones
“Crazy Train” by Black Sabbath

Speaking of bass intros… Black Sabbath’s “N.I.B.”

I’m rather partial to Maynard’s “there used to be a bunch of assholes that lived in this part of the building, but we systematically removed them like you would any kind of termite or roach” lead-in to “Jerk-Off”

Don’t know if these really count as “intros” but I like the way The Misfits’ “Last Caress” and Pantera’s “Fucking Hostile” start off

Geeking out on ya here… When I heard the intro to *Dawn & Siegfried’s Rhine Journey * by Wagner, I knew it would rock. As far as classical opera can rock.

Other than that…

“Rift” by Phish - the intro got me hooked on the band.

Crazy Train by Ozzy Ozbourne

Metallica’s “Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)” and Devin Townsend’s “Bad Devil”.

“Peace Frog” by the Doors. At least I think that has a great intro…haven’t heard the song in a while.

“Good Times Bad Times” and “Your Time is Gonna Come” - Led Zeppelin

No one’s said “Ironman” yet? Jeeeeeeeez!

I AM IRON MAN!

With apologies to Stevie Wonder, Flea’s opening to the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s cover of Higher Ground is pretty sweet.

The first time “Start Me Up” came on the radio, I heard the first three chords and said, “Hey, it’s a new Stones song!”

And speaking of the Stones, no one’s mentioned the all-time riff-rocker, “Satisfaction,” yet?

I like the beginning of New Order’s “Blue Monday.” It always makes me want to dance within just a few seconds. It’s also basically the same as the rest of the song… but that’s true of a few of these.

The Sex Pistols - “Anarchy in the UK” and “God Save the Queen.”

“Boys Don’t Cry” by the Cure. I just love that little melody for some reason.

“Minor Threat.” The beginning is the most catchy thing I ever heard. It goes downhill after that.

I really like the riff at the beginning of Rancid’s “Dope Sick Girl.”

Um, that should be “Minor Threat” by Minor Threat. Just in case anyone is confused.
