Good Support Shoes

I also have jacked-up feet (end stage arthritis in one ankle from old fracture, neuroma in the right foot, and insanely high arches which complicate everything by putting a lot of pressure on my metatarsals). Much will depend on what fits your feet well, but I sweat by prescription orthotics and a few different kinds of shoes, depending on the situation - pricy, but worth every penny to me, because the wrong shoe leaves me limping in an astonishingly short time on my feet. I need a lot of cushioning to make up for my lack of ankle cartilage, plus a LOT of arch support:

Hoka One One running shoes (they also make AWESOME hiking shoes and boots)

Fitflop (more so the closed shoes, to be worn with my orthotics, than the sandals - without orthotics they don’t have enough arch support for me, though I do have a pair of their slippers)

For sandals, Mephisto and Chaco are basically the only ones that have enough arch support for me. I do have a pair of Birkies, which I wear around the house in warm weather in lieu of sandals.

Chaco makes good casual shoes and boots, too, with good arch support, but the soles aren’t as cushy as Hoka One One or Fitflop.

I’m not sure of your gender, but Alegria makes good casual shoes with good arch support and thick, cushy, supportive insoles that are more fun and less clunky-looking than orthopedic footwear. The men’s styles are much more limited than the women’s - I like the women’s styles because they are fun, but I can’t be on my feet for hours and hours in them. YMMV. Good luck!

P.S. I have a couple of pairs of Ooofos sandals, too, which I mostly wear around the house in hot weather. They are also awesome for my particular set of issues. I should try the clogs one of these days.

Additional suggestion: once you have two pairs of good shoes, wear one to work and bring the other pair to change into halfway through the day. My mother used to always say that if she could just change her shoes, she could keep going for another X hours. I hope 2017 is a good year for you.

I’m going to go on a tangent here since we’re talking shoes for wonky feet:

Has anybody ever come across a consistent brand which has roomy toe boxes (the box is front area of any pair of footwear, rough mid-metatarsal to the tips of the toes)? Most off-the-shelf shoes have either very narrow and/or shallow toe boxes. I have hammer toes as well as bunions on both feet. I’m going to need surgery again at some point; in the meantime, except for sneakers with nylon webbed insets, nothing fits, or if it does, I end up hobbling after a few hours.

I have a pair of nonslip clogs I’m required to wear for work. They’re great but I don’t want to depend on them for everyday wear. I’m also rather cheap in that I don’t want to spend $$$ simply because I don’t have that kind of money.

Anyone? Bueller?

OK – just because I am me ------ zombies can never find the right shoes.

(marven - we sometimes make jokes like that when people wake up old threads. No offense - just a sort of local custom.)

These days the Old Wench still likes the Brooks Beasts but I have switched more to a Reebok (zeequik or memorytech) court shoe. I do a lot more twisting and turning around postal pallets at work and something like that works better for me than a walker/runner. New Balance are still good for me as well but more the Vaazee than the 500-series shoes.
