Doc says I need to start wearing shoes in the house. Got any recommendations for some comfy ones?

Just got back from my podiatrist. I have planters fasciitis.

She told me I need to start wearing shoes in the house. Which I absolutely hate. Shoes are the first thing that come off when I get home.

I think as far as the house goes my doctor is more concerned with cushion than she is support. (I already have orthotics for my outside shoes)

I was hoping you guys might have some recommendations for a guy that hates wearing shoes.

Thanks

My husband has the same issue, and he swears by his Gecko Man brand slippers. They’re pretty lightweight but still supportive.

High heeled shoes help with plantar fasciitis. A physical therapist told me to watch out for the first step you take out of bed. Your achilles tendon can become very tight when you sleep and stepping down on your heel puts a lot of pressure on it. As for comfortable around the house, I wear Sketcher slip-ons. Also comfortable on my back.

Side note: You can acquire plantar ebcdictis from carrying heavy IBM equipment.

Do you have a Costco membership? They always seem to have lightweight slip-on shoes around this time of year.

My mom wears shoes in the house too and she always seems to get something from Costco.

NY Times Wirecutter likes LL Bean’s Wicked Good Moccasins:

I’ve been using Vans slip-on shoes as my indoor shoes for years. I come in, take off my outdoor shoes, and put on the Vans.

Should have been ‘plantar febcdictis’. As if that makes it more sensible.

There’s a band that goes around your instep I’ve seen advertised. I see by the ad you can wear it barefoot for PF. Or with shoes.

Seems like it would work. I have no direct information on it.

Do the Achilles stretch when you get up in the mornings. Put your hands on a wall, feet pretty far back and imitate push-ups, heels on the floor. It helps.

I wear barefoot shoes. They are kinda like a swimmers shoe but lighter and come in cute colors, I must say.
I’ll look for the website.

Nefes shoes.com

Same boat, same slippers. They’re great and have helped immensely. Got them two months ago and I feel so much better.

They might help with the pain in the short term, since you’re not stretching out those tendons, but you WANT them stretched out.

My husband wears Crocs, or some light rubbery sandals (that have a bit more shape to them than flipflops).

Me, I never bothered even when the PF was at its worst - I too loathe wearing shoes when I don’t have to.

Another option is to use a night splint, which will help keep your ankle flexed. This will keep things from tightening up at night. In my case, I’d had recurrent bouts of PF, helped only temporarily by steroid injections and orthotics.

At one point, the pod suggested I try a splint. I bought it and never tried it. Then finally I got fed up, saw the thing in the back of the closet, and started using it.

The results were frankly dramatic. Within a few days, my pain had gone away, and has never recurred beyond an occasional twinge, since then. I have to be fair and say that I would not expect most people to have that stunning a reaction.

Anyway: around the house you want something that you can slip into quite easily, ideally without bending to fasten anything. This way you can kick them off when you’re not standing / walking, and are not tempted to skip them when you do get up.

Do you mean something like Five Fingers shoes? I have a pair, and like them for what they are (I’m terminally klutzy, and much less likely to roll my ankle wearing these) but they don’t have ANY padding.

No not those. Look at Nefesshoes.com.
They are slippers and shoes that make you feel barefoot. Very comfy, pliable and they will last forever.
Don’t really swim in them. But they feel like those kinda shoes.
When I don’t have Crocs on I have these on.

Some shoes cause plantar fasciitis. So if your feet get worse instead of better: try different shoes.

Ah - that makes more sense. Your original link was just to shoes dot come; I searched for “nefes” there and got nothing.

Sorry, clerical error.

I do feel a need to go to shoes.com now. Eeek!

I’ve been using Oofos brand sandals and shoes in the house. They are “dispensed” by a specialty shoe store my podiatrist recommended and I’ve been very happy with them. They are expensive but last a long time. But it’s important to replace them when they start to lose shape

I just got a pair of something almost identical to these but in a woman’s size. Most comfortable shoe I’ve ever worn. It’s just like being barefoot but with a decent sole you can wear outside. I have a bad back that doesn’t like any heel that isn’t perfectly flat (a negative heel is even better).

Look for “barefoot shoes” on Amazon.

I’m another one whose plantar fasciitis went away after wearing the nighttime boot, but it could have been coincidental.

Chacos, sheepskin slippers, docksiders

All my faves.

Just checking that you know podiatrists are not doctors, right? It’s not an uncommon misperception. Might be worth going to a real specialist. YMMV

Man, I have been looking for wide width kung fu shoes for years and I just got a recommendation last week from Reddit and now you come at me with those and those look even better! Wahoo! (The others, if you’re curious)

Nice!
These are the women’s shoes I got.
