Goodbye David Woodley 1958-2003

Yesterday I learned that David Woodley, former Miami Dolphins quarterback had died . I was shocked and saddened. He was only 44, and appears to have a had a number of health problems which ultimately lead to his death.

For those of you who hadn’t heard of him, he was the quarterback who succeeded Bob Griese and preceeded Dan Marino with the Dolphins. He led the Dolphins to a 11-4-1 season, and one Superbowl appearance. I don’t know if he was a good person or not, but I do know that I enjoyed watching him play, and he died way too young.

Good bye David Woodley, RIP.

I remember the season of “Woodstrock,” the strike-shortened season, when Don Shula would start Woodley (who was erratic but mobile and exciting), but yank him for Don Strock (a more conventional pocket passer) whenever conventional deep passing was called for.

An odd system but hey, it got them to a Super Bowl.

Woodley’s biggest “fault” was the same one Wally Pipp had- he was a decent starter who lost his job to one of the all-time greats. But there’s no disgrace in not being as good as Lou Gehrig or Dan Marino, is there?

RIP, David.
