Goodbye to the Legion of Super-Heroes

Except Sun Boy and Mon-El’s arm.

Mark Waid. And Levitz in his heyday was nothing to sneeze at.

“… and so, merciful Lord, accept this, our science-sister into thy bosom…
… until such time as, in thy infinite wisdom, she may be cloned, reincarnated, or otherwise revived.
This we ask, in thy name.”

Rest in peace for a little while, Legion.

Geez, that lame Sun Boy death stuck?

Don’t you mean Lightning Lad’s arm? Which he lost to The Super Moby Dick of Space.

(Super Moby Dick, of course, being the STD you contract after a night with Infectious Girl.)

No, Mon-El’s arm was a casualty to showing how badass the new Emerald Empress was in a recent issue.

And it’s a bit too early to say that Sun Boy’s lame death has “stuck”, yet. He seems to get treated harshly in these sorts of rebootathons.

Ah, I didn’t know that. Wasn’t written by Geoff Johns by any chance was it?

No, I think Johns is still busy stinking up the good stuff he did over in Green Lantern, and doing… Flash, I think? Or Aquaman, maybe?

Sad to say, the current LSH is Levitz & Giffin.

Giffen did an issue and some covers. He basically quit immediately after he started. The Legion artist is currently ‘whoever can meet the deadlines’.

Sure. But, in-story, they always intended to expand. Garth, Imra, & Rokk were just Brande’s first three recruits.

And, story external, in the team’s first appearance – with the aforementioned trio were hazing Superboy – it was clear that there were other members; you saw shadowy figures in the background. G/I/R were just the ones being focused on.

I thought Giffin was in on the plotting of the story arc with Levitz? Even if he left after two issues. Certainly the jumbled, all-in no explanation storyline going on now is strongly similar to Five Years Later in the way it reads.

I will agree, except for Saturn Girl. Not that she wasn’t drawn to be attractive; I just didn’t believe she’d actually wear it.

And, as I have written earlier hereabouts, I have doubts that Shadow Lass was ever wearing ANYTHING other than boots and a cape. Her costume was just artfully-projected shadows.

There ain’t many Legion fans more dedicated than me, but this is a mercy killing. The book (including “Legion Lost”) has been almost unreadable since Flashpoint. Hopefully when they bring it back - you know a franchise like this won’t stay dormant for long - they’ll actually have someone at the helm with a clear sense of direction for the book.

Hey, Chaim - I was hoping you’d pipe in here. I had a thought the other day - your help file is a fantastic resource for Legion Lore, but the format is dated and the information cuts off after Legion Lost. I was thinking of trying to port it over to a full-blown wiki and update it. Can I have your permission to do that, and would you have any interest in helping?

I was thinking that there could be different branches for the different Legion timelines. Sort of like the DC Wiki on Wikia handles it, but focused on the Legion.

There’s already at least one Legion Wiki that has asked me for permission to use material from my help file. Maybe instead of creating your own from whole cloth you’d like to get involved with them. The link is here.

I’d run across them before - they don’t seem terribly active.

True, but it’s still an existing framework to build on.

Still, I have no issue if you want to use my file as a basis for your own Wiki. I was just suggesting what might be an easier alternative. My file is free for anyone to use as they wish in disseminating Legion of Super-Heroes information.

I’ll look at them in more detail. But thanks.

I haven’t read them since the golden age of the 1970s. Saturn Girl, Lightning Lass, Triplicate Girl (later Duo Damsel), Ultra Boy, Mon-El, and Braniac 5 were my favorites. Proty was awesome too. Comics just aren’t what they used to be. You used to be able to buy a self-contained story whenever you want, now everything’s a serial and if you didn’t get in at the beginning you’re lost.
