Here 'tis.
**
Adventures of Superman** features a good twist on Ruin’s backstory, but… features an apparent character death I could’ve lived without. Also ties in some Checkmate stuff from the aftermath of OMAC.
NEW AVENGERS #13 Not the Frank Cho art thing, that starts next month. The good news:
Ronin’s secret identity revealed
Bad news:
No one I ever heard of
Jessica Drew’s still dancing between raindrops, but something’s clearly gotta give. It’s not cool to say this anymore, but I really like Bendis.
TOP TEN: Beyond the Farthest Precinct #4 It ain’t Alan Moore, but it has its charm. Jerry Ordway is the artist of record–and he’s on a Kirby character binge–but some of the pages look a lot like Rick Altergott inked them. DiFilippo is trying to up the stakes of the characters’ sad sex lives from what Moore had established, but it ain’t happening. Quick side trip to the Roman dimension (Janus’ homeworld, naturally).
Legion of Super-Heroes #12: Wow. That’s no Shrinking Violet. I hope this book can continue this level of quality after Infinite Crisis when (mild spoilers follow) it becomes Supergirl and the L*SH
JLA Classified #14: Okay, I’m officially bored with this story. Too bad, it started out so promising. With two JLA books, couldn’t at leats one of them feature well-written, epic stories? Or are they blowing all that on Inf Cri these days?
Batman #647: Well, it least it seems like this is heading somehwer. I liked Captain Nazi, dammit. Mostly because he was called “Captain Nazi”. No name better summed up “I’m evil, and kind of a goober” than that. Plus, he looks like his name. Like Batman or Spiderman, you can immediately guess what he’s called just by seeing him. Even the “captain” part. RIP Captain Nazi.
Wonder Woman #223: Now that’s more like it. I didn’t realize the Amazons had such advanced tech and heavy weaponry. I always thought they were more the swords and bows type. It’s a pity I didn’t catch the Rucka run sooner. Oh well, I’m sure he’ll kick ass on Supergirl when he takes that over.
Really? I have mixed feelings on that.
Are you sure that you aren’t conflating the animated series speculation because I heard that about the TV show? What’s going to happen to her book?
Due to a lack of time and money I’ve fallen behind on my comics lately. I brought and read a bunch today.
Action Comics #833: Good. Not great, but good. Wonder if the injured arm makes an appearance in the other Supes books.
Adventures of Superman #646: That’s more like it. Lois tracks down her shooter and Supes finds Ruin with a little help from Mzyie. So is Mzy a 5th dimensional Zoom, trying to make Supes better by hurting him? Gamera, its’ just a flesh wound. I think.
She-Hulk #2: Slott you son of a bitch. Getting my hopes up like that. Not Hawkeye, I don’t really know him, but the Pugs thing. Sigh.
“Crushed pelvis.” Snort.
Flash #228: Geez Wally. Why don’t you just start handing out business cards? Its’ building to something good. I hope.
Jay Garrick needs to take “escaping from chains” lessons. This seems to happen a lot.
Grûne Laterne #5: Love Van Sciver’s art (Cowgirl : drool : ), but he can go a bit overboard with the lantern symbols. Nothing too distracting though.
Black Hand could start a nifty weed killing service, but no. He has to be all evil.
(Still mild stuff about books being published after Infinite Crisis)
I don’t think so. I think I saw it announced with a bunch of other post One Year Later new titles and changes. There’s speculation that the SG in question may be a new character or Power Girl, but neither of those make sense to me. We’ve got enough Supergirls already, thank you, and the entire point of Power Girl is she’s older (and thus ineligible for this Legion) and not so attatched to the Superman identity.
As for Supergirl’s title, Greg Rucka, currently on Wonder Woman, is taking over. That’s a good match, I think.
I’ll look for the cite.
Mildly Spoilery Info Straight from DC honcho Dan Didio’s mouth.
A few of these new projects look pretty interesting. And it’s really good to see DC reaching an olive branch to fans they may have alienated in the past two years, not just through the new books, but through who’s writing them.
THAT is the final thing Mr. Slott told me about, when I ran into him a year ago. It was She-Hulk #1 when I met him… he’s basically doing a whole Moonlighting thing.
Dunno, Wolf. The cover seems to suggest otherwise, along with the tone of the book.
Menocchio - thanks for the link and spoiler, but I don’t know if I want my Legion to change like that.
Nevertheless : this week’s issue was rocking on all cylinders, and probably ties with New Avengers for my favorite book of the week. (The dialogue about Spider-Man’s mask on their trip home made me snort heartily with laughter.)
I also picked up City of Heroes, and Exiles.
Yeah, me neither. I mean, God knows that it’s precedented, but one thing that I liked about this Legion was that it was unconnected to our era. In fact, it seemed like they only remembered it from comics. I don’t really want to see someone commuting from teh present break it down.
Don’t forget the other bad news:
It makes no sense. Echo has no background knowledge of Japan that’s been established (and it would be hard to insert into her story as told thus far), and Echo’s body type (lithe dancer) bears absolutely no relation to the extremely muscular Ronin that has been shown so far. Her forearms and calves would have to triple in size.
and the other good news:
Echo is a good character. She’s only appeared in two story arcs so far: Daredevil vs #9-15 and #51-55. The first arc is quite good.
There’s a cover of an upcoming issue of Legion (maybe #14?) which shows all sorts of Legionaires from all eras: there’s '70s Grell-Costumed Phantom Girl, there’s (IIRC) an SW6 Legionaire, there’s a '60s Legion member (Triplicate Girl), there’s a 5 Years Later Cosmic Boy, and a Post-ZH Emerald Vi. The Giffen era Blok is there as is the '70’s Tyroc (didn’t they fix his costume somewhat in the Levitz/Giffen era?)!
The header says something like “The Multiverse’s Greatest Heroes”.
Given that, it’s entirely possible that the Supergirl will be (for example) the Earth-1 Supergirl, or Andromeda with a new name.
Ah, it’s number #15. Here’s a link
I’m really getting tired of the Avengers as a team of inappropriate characters and 70’s second bananas. Luke Cage? Ok, I’m cool with that 'cause Bendis does such a good Cage. Spidey? Y’know, as much as I didn’t like the concept, it’s actually a fairly refreshing change. But Sentry? Spiderwoman? < cough > Ronin < /cough>? Wolverine? Enough. Let’s see the return of some real Avengers like Wasp or Hawkeye or the Vision and not just “Bendis’s Favorite Characters”. Frankly, this is almost starting to read more like the '70s team The Champions, who were also a bunch of inappropriate characters shoehorned together.
Also, I only skimmed this issue, but why was Cap repeating everything Iron Man was saying? I don’t remember any < translation brackets >.
I also picked up the Absolute Crisis. It was expensive, but damn it’s pretty. I’ve only had a few minutes to glance at the compendium, but something odd: they’ve apparently catalogued every imaginary story* (at least the Silver and Bronze-Age ones) and numbered each of them as a seperate Earth. So the Imaginary Story where Superman marries Lois (and she dies), then Lana (and she dies) and then Lori Lemaris (and she dies) is, for instance, Earth-367, or the original Superman-Red/Superman-Blue story is, for instance, Earth-643. Those never were numbered Earths before. I don’t really have a problem with it, mind you, but it’s not traditional.
Fenris
*Weirdly, as well-researched as this seems to be, I caught one apparent goof right off. They counted the World’s Finest “Super-Sons” series (the teen-aged, '70s angsty adventures of the sons of Superman and Batman) as a numbered Earth. However, those were established as simulations done on a super-computer in the Fortress of Solitude, so they’re technically not “Imaginary Stories” and shouldn’t have their own parallel Earth unless every work of fiction has it’s own numbered Earth.
Fenris:
I totally don’t see anyone you’ve mentioned except the prominently-displayed Blok, Dawnstar and Tyroc (whose costume had never been “fixed.” He returned to the Legion in civilian clothes after the 5 Year Gap, but as long as he ever had a costume, it was that one). The Phantom Girl you’re seeing is the current version, whose costume is indeed evocative of her seventies costume, The person you take to be a 5 Years Later Cosmic Boy is I think the current version of Timber Wolf, the guy you think is an SW6 Legionnaire is, I think, the current Invisible Kid and/or Shrinking Violet (aka Atom Girl), the one you think is Emerald Vi is, I believe, the current Projectra or Shadow Lass, and I have no idea who you’re seeing that you think is a 1960’s-era Triplicate Girl.
I was getting the impression that she, for some reason, only listens to Cap. But I noticed the behavior too.
How much was it?
Legion, post Infinite Crisis and Supergril speculation follows.
Ugh. I really hope not. The other thing I really enjoy about this Legion is that it’s been very friendly to readers like me, who have practically no background on the past incarnation. For example, I have no idea who most of those people Fenris mentioned are (and aside from the big three in front, I think I recognize most of the characters as current Legionaires, Invisible Kid and maybe Brin are wearing new costumes). While I can abide by occasional visits, or some new characters being introduced, the multiverse can get very confusing.
Which brings me to my next point. While I like the multiverse as an occasional place to visit, or as setting background, DC should very severly limit the number of alternates for a single character. How many Supergirls do we really need? There’s two active right now. And Matrix could turn up again. Ditto that false daughter of Superman. This kind of confusion ius why DC shut down the multiverse in the first place.
I got a discount, so I got it for ~$70.00.
I’m not convinced that the character in question actually died in Adventures of Superman either. I could be wrong.
The only other book I’ve had time to read was Batman, which I enjoyed. So, Hyena’s male, huh? Like Deathstroke, I would not have checked under the hood. Hee. I really like the interaction between Batman and Red Hood, and Batman’s continued conflict over exactly how to relate to him and what to do or not do about him. This could have been a ridiculous, irritating plot, but it’s not. Hooray for good writing.
Fun Hyena facts! The female is the dominant in the pack, and has evolved certain… parts… to look male.
Don’t know if this actually needs a spoiler box or not but…
Echo is deaf and needs to read lips. That’s impossible to do with Iron Man.
Excellent info, cckerberos. There you go.
I also picked up JLA Classified, which wasn’t impressive, and Ultimate FF, which was kinda neat, though I’m mixed on the art.
Thanks cckerberos.
But did they actually tell us that fact anywhere in the book? I only skimmed it, but I didn’t notice that.
