Google has Failed Me - Verootje

None of the native Dutch speakers who’ve participated here so far have given those translations, so I’m not convinced the accuracy of it.

Well, either it isn’t correct here, or Dutch has developed some new words since I left which cannot be found elsewhere on the internet.

Hello BartR, and welcome to the Straight Dope!

Yeah, a lot of people named “Veronique” and “Veronica/ika” etc. on social media seem to have the username “Verootje”. (But I think you meant “given name” rather than “surname”.)

Oops, so much for that first impression :-).

I can partly see where that comes from: ‘ver’ is Dutch for ‘far’. I can’t see where the ‘ootje’ part comes in though.

Exactly, without context that makes the most sense.

I apologize for asking a question and then not returning, but I had oral surgery, and it was more brutal than I had anticipated.

The context of the word Verootje was in a post offering condolences to the family of a member who had passed away. The sentence is as follows, “I want to offer my condolences to your family, until one day, Verootje.” After reading all of the posts here I believe it is a nickname of sorts.

Thank you for carrying on without any more input from me, and I apologize again for asking a question and then disappearing. Now that I am reading it without the horrible pain in my mouth, it seems to be rather apparent that it is a name or nickname. It’s amazing how that kind of pain renders me dumber than a rock.
