I had a Stadia subscription - I started out on the paid service, and then converted it to the free offering. For my use case it was great - I don’t have a lot of time to play games, and I don’t have a gaming rig or console, but now and again I get a hankering to play something AAA. Stadia worked perfectly for that.
The technology was very impressive - it was easy to forget that I was streaming the games. It’s the business model that has failed.
I’m pleased that I’m getting a refund for my purchases (not that I’ve spent much on the platform) and if I can find an equivalent service I’d certainly consider it.
I think if they had started as a gamepass type subscription rather than the weird subscribe-and-buy model they chose it might have been successful. A gamepass type model clearly works for streaming services, it eliminates concern over what happens to your purchases if the service goes under - sure, now we know they refunded it, but people didn’t know then and it probably kept them away. Asking you to subscribe and then buy games was just weird.
