Here is a street scene in central London, England. What is the significance of what we are looking at?
Think I got it, but you might be going for something less obvious. Tyburn tree?
Yes, it was the location of the notorious Tyburn Tree, a gallows where public executions took place in front of huge crowds. The earliest recorded execution at the site took place in 1196 and the location continued to be used for this purpose until the 18th century. Thirty-eight people with Wikipedia pages were hanged here, including Oliver Cromwell, who was hanged posthumously.
Now a traffic island at the end of Europe’s busiest shopping street, there is a stone set into the ground marking the spot, which can be seen in the picture if you zoom in. The three trees that surround it represent the three legs of the triangular gallows.
Doh! Didn’t notice that. I knew from reading way too much British history that Edgeware and Bayswater were in the vicinity of Tyburn, and when I looked at the satellite view and saw Tyburn Way coming from Hyde Park/Speaker’s Corner, that clinched it for me.
