GOP Chairman and Chinese Money

To answer a question raised in another thread, here is the relevant section of the report of the Senate committee, chaired by Sen. Fred Thompson (R-TN), on the influence of Chinese campaign contributions in the 1996 elections:

RNC Chairman Haley Barbour was recommended for prosecution by the Justice Department attorney assigned to review the case. The RNC kept the money.

Beg your pardon, Barbour was recommended for prosecution by the Federal Elections Commission, not the Justice Department. DoJ declined the recommendation.

The Dept of Justice is headed by Clinton appointee Janet Reno. If she declined to prosecute the case, then IMHO it was probably groundless.

Does the same apply to Gore and the Buddhist temple?

This would probably make a lot more sense if it were posted in the thread that spawned it. As it is, this thread seems to just be some political mutterings, which don’t really fit in here. I’ll just close this.
