Why doesn’t the GOP use the Democrats’ position on vouchers against them? Seems to me it’s made to order opening. A perfect example is Washington, DC where vouchers have improved the lives of so many minorities. Yet because of the Democrats’ alliance with the various teachers’ unions, the program is being cancelled.
I find it odd the Republicans aren’t making hay with this. There has to be a logical reason why not.
For one thing, the evidence isn’t clear that vouchers have improved students’ lives. Here in DC, two years after the voucher program was implemented, the Department of Education did a study which found no difference at all between test scores of public school students and those who used the voucher program. The only difference found was that parents felt like their children were going to safer schools, a perception that students did not agree with.
I’ll post a link to the report once I get on a real computer, rather than this iPhone.
They mention it all the time. However, it’s not the type of issue that gets press coverage (“Rush Limbaugh wants school vouchers” is nowhere near as good a story as “Linbaugh wants Obama to Fail”), nor does it inflame the party faithful as much as things like abortion or security. There’s no real reason for the GOP to stress it, since it’s too mundane to infuriate voters.
Some Republicans do see the potential. I think you`re not paying close enough attention.
Also, FYI, Democratic National Committee (DNC) is not analogous to GOP. DNC is not shorthand for the Democratic Party the way Grand Old Party is a convenient shorthand for the Republican Party.
