GOP House investigation of President Joe Biden follow along thread

Others in the GOP are starting to weigh in on this and are pushing the narrative in the House report linked upthread:

It’s not about the poor schlub who got caught. It’s about the boss. It’s about the big guy. It’s about the Godfather, Joe Biden is the Godfather. He is the one who ultimately is profiting on this corruption. He is the one who is abusing official authority to further the criminal activity of his family members. And that’s why this is an issue of public corruption.

Sen. Ted Cruz talking to Fox News.

I’d like to see him say that under oath.

It’s almost like these guys are saying all of the things that they were dummying up about while Trump was in office. That’s just pathetic.
Figures it was Cruz who said it.

I know Freud is so out of style, but man if that isn’t projection I don’t know what is. Joe Biden the Godfather?

If they say they are going to legislate, or govern, or do anything to help the American people, I don’t believe them.

If they say they are going to do some petty, vindictive shit to try to get some conspiracy theory bullshit to stick to a Democrat, I believe them. They love that stuff. They do it every chance they get and there’s zero reason to believe they won’t do it this time.

Who’s going to stop this? Kevin McCarthy?

"Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right? But we put together a Benghazi Special Committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping.” - Kevin McCarthy

The godfather who has so much dementia that he can’t remember what day it is? They really need to keep their lies straight.

The sad thing is that they don’t. They’ve drilled cognitive dissonance into their drones through decades of conditioning. And that’s all this theater is for.

I do believe an “investigation” will happen, the same way that Trump created an “investigation” to determine how much fraud was in the 2016 election (where he lost the popular vote). He was convinced that illegal aliens were brought in by buses to vote. (That investigation revealed no evidence of any fraud, just as this will.)

That’s your sole reasoning? They say that that are going to launch an investigation and so you conclude they aren’t? They aren’t characters in some logic problem with twin brother who always tells the truth. They lie or tell the truth if it suits their purposes. They said they were going to approve conservative judges, and they approve conservative judges. They said they were going to lower taxes and they lowered taxes. If they say they are going to smear their poltical opponent in prime time, they may well decide to smear their political opponent in prime time.

There is absolutely no reason why they wouldn’t launch an investigation. Its not as if it would take time away form their agenda. Their sole agenda is to act as a block against anything the Democrats might propose so they can accuse Biden of being a do-nothing president in 2024. This actually gives them something to fill the time.

I realize that the last four years of Congressional investigation makes it appear as though you actually need to have evidence to present, but that is the exception rather than the rule. Most Congressional investigations involve 20 minutes of self centered pontificating followed by 5 minutes of asking leading questions to witnesses. This hearing will be effectively multiple hours of free campaign ads that the networks are forced to cover saying all the same things they have been saying all along,

Seriously DrDeth give one good reason why they wouldn’t jump at the chance?

But seriously, he wasn’t. He only said that because he’s a fucking liar. The idea that the fucking liar actually believes the bullshit he spews absolves him of personal responsibility, and it can stop like 4, 5, or 6 or more fucking years ago.

Biden is a Schrodinger’s Godfather. He’s both omnipotently powerful, and a doddering idiot. You can’t tell which one he is until you watch Fox News each evening.

They lied.

They didn’t build the Wall either. Those magic jobs for the rust belt? They lied. They lie all the time.

Razor thin majority.

And yes**, they might.** But they have not yet done so. So this thread is basically a rant against some GOP moron who wants some publicity. That is my point. Sure it is possible they might. But they have not. When they do, come back… and bring pie.

Razor thin majority. Two of them voted ti impeach trump. More are tired of his BS.

Investigating Biden has no bearing on whether they’re tired of Trump and his BS. Even with a razor-thin majority and two people who voted to impeach Trump, there’s no reason for them to NOT investigate Biden. Anything they can do to stop democrats in general from winning elections is fair game to them.

They’re not in control yet. They will be in 40 days.

They are definitely going to do this. A razor thin majority won’t give them a second thought. They think this will help them at the ballot box and it just might. Kevin McCarthy bragged about how BS investigations helped them against Hillary.

Two people who will have the power to launch Congressional investigations in 40 days have said they are going to launch investigations, and zero people in their party have given any indication that they don’t want these investigations.

Kevin McCarthy, who just won his party’s nomination for speaker, wants investigations.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/18/politics/house-republican-investigations-biden/index.html

“In just 47 days, House Republicans will have the gavel, and we will be prepared to hold the Biden administration accountable from day one,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy tweeted Thursday. “Our investigations are just getting started.”

The Republican caucus is chock full of contrarian dickheads so they don’t all agree on much, but this is one of the things they agree on. They all agree that investigating Biden and the Biden admin will help them so they are going to do exactly that.

They are already notifying the White House of who they want to question.

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/republicans-identify-42-biden-administration-officials-they-want-testify-2022-11-18/

In Nov. 18 letters to White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain and other top administration officials, 19 Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee said they need testimony on issues including border security, school board threats and claims of bias within the FBI and Justice Department.

19 Republican members of the current House Judiciary Committee are on board with this. Do you know how many Republicans are on that committee? Spoiler alert: 19.

Yeah, but, they’re not ““leaders”” in the House so that doesn’t count . . . for reasons.

There’s not much a party can do with a razor thin margin in the House when the Senate and the White House are both in the hands of the other party, but one of the things they can do is launch congressional investigations.

Razor thin margin is the reason these investigations are sure to happen, not the reason they won’t.

Do you have proof of that? That sounds like your opinion. I think it’s more likely that he believed it. Plausibly, he was throwing a toddler temper tantrum about not having won a perfect election and one of his sycophants suggested the idea to him to calm him down, and maybe have a little less ketchup to clean off the walls. Since Trump has a fragile ego, he’d grasp onto that idea and cling to it in order to convince himself that he wasn’t a loser and people adore him. He was so convinced, and wanted to prove it to everyone else, he insisted on an investigation.

There are things we know he lied about. We know he lied about having actually won in 2020 (based on testimony from those who worked for him), and he admitted to downplaying the severity of Covid. But a megalomaniac can be tricked into believing things that his toadies tell him when they’re self-serving.

As it relates to the Biden investigation, I suspect that the Republicans don’t expect to find actual wrongdoing, but hope they can find something they can spin into an embarrassment or some kind of innuendo that will help them in 2024. That would be make an investigation useful and worth their time, even when impeachment is impossible and even they don’t expect to find anything criminal.

The worst kind of liar is the kind that convinces themselves of their lies.

You are talking past each other. He said it because he’s a liar, and he believes it because it is what he wants to believe.

One of the most impressive developments or at least revelations is the mindset of the Republican who can believe something they know to be untrue.

I don’t believe so. I believe it is an important distinction to remember that Trump is deliberately lying. This means that he does not believe the lies he spreads. And I refuse to cut a deliberate liar any slack.

I don’t think that’s always the case. I see people fool themselves into believing their own lies all the time.

That’s nice, but no one is cutting him any slack, so I don’t know why you felt the need to make that statement.

But the thing is, his investigation found there was no fraud. Which means they really did take a real look at the evidence. Which means they really thought there would be evidence.

If Trump knew, really knew, that his claims were full of shit, why wouldn’t he tell the investigators to fake their results? He clearly didn’t have any trouble telling the guys in Georgia to “find” some extra votes so he could win the last election, so why would he hesitate to tell these guys to “find” some fraud?

He really believed his own bullshit. That’s the fundamental problem with Trump. He lies reflexively, but then actually starts to believe his own lies almost instantly.
