Gore, titties and the United States of America.

Okay, so I do get a little worked up over threads that hit close to home, just want to add a disclaimer to this post so no one thinks I’m just totally ticked off and throwing chairs around my office :).

Personally, I’m shocked at what can be shown on a PG-13 movie. There are things shown that I would never want my 13 yr old to see. It’s illegal to corrupt a minor, that’s why an 18 yr old can get in trouble for dating someone who’s 17, but it seems that whatever hollywood does to the minor is just fine… did I miss something? Is everyone on the face of the planet really as stupid as they appear?

Violence is okay, it’s practically endorsed by everyone, but if you even think about sex you are going straight to hell. I believe that if you make one thing inappropriate, anything that’s obviously much worse than that must also be inappropriate, either that, or make them equally acceptable. However, if I had it my way, then there would be a certain age where every parent would be required by law to sit their child down in front of a porno and explain to them everything (and I mean everything) that there is to know about sex. Actually, I think 13 or 14 would be the best time.

Trust me on this, if and when I do have children, I will make it my goal to do this, I don’t need someone with a gun to impose it upon me, that’s for sure. Keeping a child “innocent” is most likely the worst thing you can do to destroy their future, it would have been better to not have had said child, than to ruin every waking moment of their lives…speaking from experience of course.

Oh, and yes, if I was in that situation exactly, I’d make sure the kid saw the porno instead of the gore. Even if it meant I’d get in a lot more trouble over it, I’d do it for the kid’s sake and take a hit for it, but who, exactly would get me in trouble? The kid? The kid would be my best friend after that, plus not only would he/she understand the situation and not rat on my decision seeing how my life would be at stake, but they’d probably thank me several years down the road when they find out what’s in the Saw movies (or their equivalent)…the director and writers of Saw should be forced into the same situations as their movies…I’ll even clean up afterward, gleefully.

Really, she’s right. I’ve been thinking about this, and the reason I jumped to the worst kind of sex I can think of is because in my mind, that’s what’s equivalant to a horribly violent movie. Graphic, consentual sex, even showing dick and vulva just doesn’t cut it. Not even anal sex. Not even rough sex if she’s getting into it. All of those things are “normal” in that I don’t seriously think they’ll fuck up a child.

The OP says “extreme violence - think a compilation of the worst bits in the Saw or Hostel franchises”. That to me isn’t remotely comparable to the kind of sex the OP specifies. So I never even compared those two - I compared the kind of sex I would find horrific to the kind of violence I would find horrific.
Bosstrain the directors of Saw should be forced into the same situations as their characters? What, you mean, being forced to do 27 takes of the same scene over and over with someone telling them 'MOAR TERROR!" (They already do that anyway, being directors). I mean, I don’t like those movies either, but you do know they are fake, right? It’s not like the actors are genuinely going through that stuff.

ETA: If the directors have to go through it, so should the intended audience. There’d be no movies if people weren’t watching them.

Yeah, I guess that the movie violence equivalent of straight porn would be Braveheart.

You speak my mind, Anaamika, you speak my mind. Maybe a little harsh, but I do have to wonder if violent crime would diminish afterwards. If gory deaths were imposed upon those who glorify death, something tells me this world may make somewhat of a change for the better. I remember when movies still held fast to some morals, there may have been death, but that was all done by the badguy and at the end he got his just reward. In fact, the protagonists wouldn’t even be the ones to kill him, sometimes he’d do it himself by accident while trying to escape or something.

I picked the sex one, thinking that the violence DVD was real violence. I think I would show the fake violence one even if realistic, but as others have pointed out in the thread, I’d be swayed by the parents’ wishes if known. I wouldn’t worry about the legal ramifications of showing a DVD at gunpoint.

No. I mean, I really don’t think so. We are a violent species. I really don’t believe watching it makes you want to go out and do it.

Anyway, I just wanted to be clear that I was disagreeing with you, not agreeing with you.

I think everyone understood that you didn’t agree ;), just sayin’. Anyway, here’s one of my first few posts I made on a similar thread…it’s the last one on here, explains my position on this with absolute perfection :).

Fair 'nuff.
