In the federal government, this is called the “Washington Monument Ploy”, named for the Interior Department’s proposal to close the Monument to tourist visits, which gets trotted out within seconds of any hint of a cut to the department’s budget.
I would have to leave the union to get a management position where I work. No way I’m doing that with this company. I’m not management material anyway, I do not have that kind of competence.
One place I worked (not for long) was obnoxious like this. Not most though. Most people have enough meetings that no one knows if you are there or not, and most managers have better things to do than figure out when people show up or leave.
Not to mention people checking email at home. Now, people who do well also work a lot, but that doesn’t mean they take time off to go to the dentist when needed.
