Got my carry permit today!

Could wear a fanny pack holster. It’ll always be concealed then. And protected.

Speaking as someone who does not live in America, and finds America’s attitude towards guns to be sad and frightening, what are the potential consequences of not carrying a gun around everywhere you go?

Being attacked by Red Indians.

This is not the thread you’re looking for.

We have that hijack enough around here. The horse is dead, the well has run dry, that dog don’t hunt.

This (un)official notice that such things will now be considered Thread Shitting in threads such as this one. At least by those of us who are attempting to have an enjoyable discussion about our hobby.
(ATTN: MODS. Can we at least have that luxury around here? Please?)

We now return to the “Ooo! Shiny!” CCW thread.

I bought one of those fanny pack things a long while ago. Never used it. It’s pretty big as those things go, and I never enjoyed wearing those kinds of acutrements in the first place. A simple belt holster under a coat is a lot better. Especially in a place where you can comfortably wear a long coat about 7 months (or more) of the year.

:frowning: I was trying to be as non-confrontational as possible.

When you said this?

Dude, whatever your reasons, dislikes, or even fears about guns, and whatever their validity, which I will not address, at least admit the above was pretty blatantly inflammatory. Plus given the backdrop of the strange anti-gun screed you posted on your blog today (linked right from your SDMB profile (which I went to to find out what “better and brighter” country you were living in), so no one had better falsely claim I’m “outing” you), it’s pretty clear you were looking for a gun control debate here.

This is not a gun control thread, and I’m not going to waste my time fighting your ignorance on this subject.

I tried to send this in PM to GuanoLad, but that resulted in a database error, and considering that people are already commenting on post #22, here’s my take.

Strictly speaking, there is only one consequence: if you don’t carry everywhere, when you do need a gun, you aren’t likely to have it. Sure, the likelihood of needing a gun to protect yourself is pretty low, but that event is even less likely to occur on the victim’s terms. Having a gun is not a guarantee to survival, either, but it can definitely help.

Furthermore, some of us would rather be dead than become victims of certain crimes.

…Now back to the Oooo! Shiny! Ccw thread.

Does any state require some proof that you have a reason to conceal carry, say carrying money late at night or working in some dangerous profession?

I’m gonna agree with Una and Chimera here. Drop it, not worth going forwards. That’s a Great Debate, and this isn’t GD.

I dunno. I don’t like belt holsters in modern society. Them and hip holsters make sense if you’re standing a lot, but if you’re sitting, they’re pains.
(And don’t forget: Printing is short for ‘imprinting’, eg, the imprint of the weapon being visible.)

If you carry and you’re a small person, it seems like you really only have three options:

  • Get a ridiculously small gun, like a Ruger LCP (has anyone here held one of those? It’s so ridiculously small I didn’t even want to fire it).
  • Put it in your purse or carry a handbag.
  • Wear a coat or jacket all the time to cover up.

I carry mine in a handbag or purse. Sometimes if I wear really loose pants I can carry in a pocket.

I only carry part of the time. For one thing, I’m forbidden to carry to work, and we have high security in our building and parking lot anyways. I generally only carry when shopping or any time I’m walking on one of the many park trails nearby. Christmas is a good time, since I can wear it under my coat and since I tend to shop late, it’s nice comfort for long walks carrying presents.

My initial reason for posting is that even though I know people are all sizes and shapes, but I can’t seem to make guns disappear on my body. Maybe I wear clothing that’s too tight…

Well, the Ruger LCP is tiny. I’ve never owned one, but I have owned the P3AT from which the Ruger is derived. Recoil isn’t bad and I’ve never been bitten by the slide of one. I am not terribly confident with the P3AT past 15 yards or so, however.

The only major downfall to the design is that the recoil spring has been known to peen the slide with extended use (10,000 rounds or so?), eventually allowing the spring to launch itself down range. Kel-tec, at least, has excellent customer service and will replace the slide free of charge should this happen.

Yes, any “holster” that conceals the outline and allows the firearm to be fired without removal is classified as Any Other Weapon (AOW) and requires BATF paperwork. The tax is only $5, but you still need the print card, photo and all that.

I have several NFA weapons and am quite familiar with the requirements.

I tried out a large number of weapons before I chose the Glock 26. I tried out the Kel Tec but not the LCP. The Glock 26 was IMO the gun which combined best the competing qualities of low recoil, controllable recoil, small size, standard round, and reliability. My only peeve with it is the trigger safety actually hurts my finger slightly. I wish it didn’t do that.

I did not know that. You learn something every day on the SDMB.

I do like the looks of the 5.11 Tactical Jacket, but I’ve never seen one up close.

And that’s definitely cool weather clothing.

The requirements differ by county in California, but yes, mony of those that will issue a CCW require such proof. I had to prove it, and the jury’s still out on whether or not my reasons will be considered good enough by the Sheriff.

Do you feel like sharing?

Una, if I carried a purse regularly and wanted somewhere to keep my firearm, I’d invest in something like the Galco Meridian carry purse. Much better than fumbling in a standard purse in a crisis.

“Gimme your dough!”
“Sure, let me get my wallet out…”

In Oregon the Sheriff must provide a reason to deny the permit, instead of you providing a reason you need one. No reason to deny and you get one provided you take the training class and meet the requirements.
