Got potato salad, want loaded mashed! (Recipe ideas?)

I’ve got a bunch of boring store-bought “picnic grade” potato salad that I want to doctor up into hot loaded mashed potatos for a potluck.

My thoughts were to warm up the potato salad in a pot, possibly add some ranch dressing for flavor, and fold in crumbled bacon and cheddar cheese. Top with chopped green onion and dollops of sour cream, then hope people like it.

Anyone tried doing this before? And did it work ok? My main worry is the potato chunks breaking down or if the if mayo-mustard sauce breaks and I end up with potato soup.

I dunno. That’s a lot of mayonnaise getting involved. I don’t see that flavor working with hot mashed potatoes very well.

I wish I had a recipe for my mom’s potato salad. It was the best. Not too long ago I made potato-mac salad, more or less following this recipe. It turned out quite well. If I leave out the macaroni noodles and the peas (though I like peas) and add mustard (and sweet pickle relish?) it might get me close to mom’s potato salad. (Dad made his potato salad like mom’s, only he used leftover mashed potatoes.)
