Got the iPad for 22 hours. Broke the screen.

Incredible. Stood up to let the gal move remove the tables outside because Starbucks was closing. Chatting with a student I will be teaching this week. Thought I had a good grip… and it slid to the brick pavement. Landed ON the corner. Cracked the glass.

Two cracked lines meeting about 1" into the lit screen area. Some glass gone from the corner that hit.

Apple store here in Palo Alto says it’s roughly 1/2 the cost of the iPad. Which was a gift. Several months ago. From an employer.

Ahhh fuck. An elegant device, too good to be true. I’ve tried touching very lightly all around the cracks, for now the screen responds perfectly. No idea if that response will last.

Heartbroken. Will I really pay hundreds and hundreds?? It’s an AT&T enabled 32 gig iPod II.

Thoughts? Does one try replacing the glass one’s self??

:frowning:

Damn.

Third parties will do it for cheaper, but it voids the warranty. Here’s one option, or you can go someplace local.

Not an Apple user, but I’ve seen this a dozen times. :stuck_out_tongue:

edit: honestly, though, if you don’t think you’ll use it much, why not just sell it?
edit2: ebay has screen replacements.

Don’t bother calling AT&T about it. I used to work for them and unless something’s changed, anything regarding Apple just gets sent to Apple directly. Apple will fix it for you but it’s going to cost you.

As for fixing it yourself, unless you have experience with that type of stuff, I’d suggest against it. Mostly because I’m not even sure the tools are available to the general public, let alone replacement screens.

Oh, I plan to use it nonstop. It was a gift to my wife. I had given her one last year. Her company gave all employees an iPad II for a good year’s work. It sat there, unopened, because we were unsure if I’d use it or if we’d gift it.

I plan to use it heavily and so this is really killing me.

So definitely get it fixed third party…and then maybe get a hard case for it.

I have an Otterbox for my Droid phone. It’s my version of insurance.

Yep. Found a company not too far away that says it does this kind of work. I sent a request for a quote, and will see if I can messenger it down in the morning and have it fixed in a day or so.

Just… .chafes. Was a gift and now it’s costing.

I have my Droid X2 in a silicone soft case, it’s saved that thing a few times. I really rarely drop stuff, I’m irked I did so with this device. So quickly after falling in love with it, well that is double irksome…

I thought iPads had a feature where they jump to their death after 12 months just to force owners to upgrade.

I had a similar disaster but a different outcome. I tripped and fell on my 6 week old iPad (that I had only been using for 2 weeks - birthday present). The glass was cracked and the whole unit had about a 12° bend in it with the back plate popped loose. It still worked…sort of.

I was heartbroken. I took it into the Apple Store not expecting them to be able to do anything. The Genius Barista took it in the back to show his manager. A moment later he came back and said they would give me a completely new unit - no charge! They worked with me to restore my data and update my account with Verizon. They were wonderful.

Note: this occurred on the day of the memorial service for Steve Jobs. So maybe they were feeling especially kindly. Thanks Steve.

Think of how much worse it would have been had you paid $1000 for it and then done this.

True, that. I found a company that will replace it. Web site said, email us 24/7. So, at 10 pm last night I did.

Got an email back from the store manager. He offered to pick it up ON the way in to work today and have it fixed by end of day. Rough price on parts and labor- $ 150.00.

I was prepared to hire a messenger. This fellow is going above and beyond. Very kind of him.

Encinitas, that’s a horrifying damage story with a sweet ending. Jobs or no Jobs, I do suspect that it is in their interest to simply give some away rather than slam with a pricey repair/ replacement cost. It earns them enormous good will.

My company does the same thing. We routinely replace items " under warranty " years after the warranty is out. If it’s something we know might have been an issue, or we feel a part failed and really shouldn’t have, we pay for it.

As an addition to the question, is there any kind of case you can buy to minimize the damage when you drop it. If I had one, I’d be the type to drop mine.

Dozens. There are cases that will protect it from damage even if you drive over it. The downside of that of course is that the case is bulky and you lose the slim and light properties.

For someone who is particularly butter fingers or just generally hard on their electronics I highly recommend theOtterbox Defender (link leads to the description of the cases, the link for the Ipad case shows… an Ipad with no case :smack:)

Mine is in a slim leather case and while I’m pretty careful it’s been dropped a couple of times with no issues. I think the leather absorbs a fair amount of shock and I’m not quite ready to give up the ability to shove it into a pocket of my purse.

Umm, it came that way right? They need to give you a new one that wasn’t broken in the box.

I **LOVE **my Dodocase. Not as ridiculously bulky as an Otterbox, very secure, yet easy to remove when you want to take it out. It fits in well on a table without screaming “iDevice contained within!” I’ve gotten several compliments on it, and I just have the boring black exterior one.

Call Apple directly. They let my husband replace his 64 gig WiFi iPad (first gen) that he dropped on its corner and cracked the screen for 249.00 plus shipping, even though it was out of warranty and not a warrantable repair. They also sent a coupon code for the UPS store to ship the old one back for recycling at no charge. This was about 6 weeks ago.

It never hurts to ask.

Otterbox. What my husband should have kept on his iPad. :stuck_out_tongue:

Exactly what happened to me. (except the Jobs memorial part) I couldn’t believe it.

Was this thing not in a case? Whenever I get a portable device, the first thing I do is buy a case. I’ve broken too many things to not think of that.
