Governor General of Canada resigns after “scathing” report on workplace harrassment

Looks like the Privy Council Office has been moving quickly:

I’m also curious if they will release an executive summary or redacted version of the report.

Leblanc on Question Period yesterday said it’ll be a redacted version DOJ is looking at it now. The only thing that should be redacted is the identity of the employees. Here’s hoping that’s all that’s redacted but not holding my breath.

I agree. Though hindsight is 20/20, this sounds like a big and unnecessary fuckup on Trudeau’s part.

I hope they don’t dawdle in finding her replacement. I’d rather that the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada focus on his full time job than fuss about as interim GG. Yes, the SCC bench can spread the load among themselves, but it’s not like they are sitting on their hands.

I know we’re stuck paying her 150K pension until the end of time. I at least hope they revoke her annual travelling expenses that’s usually afforded to all GGs. I can’t imagine there being a demand after this to hear her speak from anyone about anything.

There’s an important political issue regarding the selection of the H.O.S, independent of Trudeau’s personal meglomania.

If the GG is selected independently, it gives the GG an independent source of authority. It makes the GG both less likely to accept direction, and more likely to win if there is a fight.

Having seen these things develop in small clubs and big business, I’m aware of the problems that can cause, and the problems caused by people reacting to the situation. And it’s always a big part of the discussion about the method of selection for the GG.

I don’t mean that Trudeau was right to disband the search panel, just that it was an entirely understandable action that doesn’t in itself say anything about him. Of course, having disbanded the search panel, any decision he makes is entirely his own fault. Avoidance of fault is the main reason for handing things off to committees.

We need a normal person, schooled in the arts of parliamentary democracy, diplomacy, and Canadian history, who can speak French and English easily, and who knows both Quebec civil and English common law.

I nominate Northern Piper.

I’ll second the nomination. But if he turns all Clarkson on us, he has to take me on some of the lavish post-pension trips.

Shoot, I was gonna nominate you!

Which one is more likely to help me tour Scandinavia?

Nomination thirded.

I appreciate the thought, Boo, but I’d really need to brush up on my French. I was fairly fluent at one time, but it’s withered through disuse. I suppose a refresher course could fix that, but I’m unsure how long it would take before I could converse easily with Canadian French speakers.

If one were to leak to the press that Northern Piper has been short-listed, that might get the PMO to consider him.

Julie Payette hates her job

Man, can you imagine someone as competent as Northern Piper in the federal government?!? Never mind GG, Northern Piper for Prime Minister!

I agree!

Northern Piper for Benevolent Dictator!

BTW, as GG he also gets a spiffy uniform.

Several of them, in fact, depending on the occasion.

The USA has a designated survivor.

Canada has a designated grump.

To help protect Canadians from our designated grump, we try to keep them busy with lots of time-filling ceremonial meetings with non-Canadian dignitaries.
