Governor Jerry Brown signs assisted suicide bill.

Why not? You’re perfectly happy presuming to speak for the entirety of humanity.

Isn’t Smapti already a self admitted coward? I seem to remember a couple of years back him admitting to that. Something to do with the police I believe. Or something to do with his hypothetical children and how he wouldn’t risk his life to save his own child? I don’t know, the details are vague.

I find it quite comical that all the sudden he’s found such “bravery” as long as it’s not his ass on the line.

Bravery is just a red herring; he is afraid that the government is going to kill him in his sleep in 50 years. He wants others to suffer to avoid that. It’s textbook cowardice.

Is it OK if it’s suicide by cop?

Exactly. He bleats on and on about the cowardice of others, yet his behavior is solely motivated by nothing but fear… his own. And the startling thing in face of so many who actually have life threatening conditions that he’s lecturing them on is that in reality, he’s making everything about him when it’s their life. He has no clue what he’s talking about, no self-awareness of how inane and ridiculous he comes across as, and how much he’s really the one who is terrified of everything. He needs authority / structure / order, etc. to make his world make sense. But dear God, if only he’d be silent about it some and let others discuss important issues without him monopolizing these topics. We get it, it doesn’t have to be repeated endlessly in every. single. damn. thread. until the end of time.

I sincerely hope and pray that you end up like someone I know: with a slow, painful form a cancer AND severe Alzheimer’s so he doesn’t understand what’s happening.

And then see if you still hold the same dumbass position.

PS–as the son of a Holocaust survivor, your attempt to tie death-camps to physician assisted suicide make you so far beneath contemptible that if you were on fire, I wouldn’t piss on you to put it out.

Maybe he feels we’d benefit from an outsider’s perspective.

Nah, that’s not it. Because my husband doubled over from unending pain 24/7 doesn’t need his self-aggrandizing bullshit hypotheticals encroaching on his very real, end-of-life world. It means jack shit to folks (and their loved ones) who live[d] it and is recognized for the utter tripe it is. No, Smapti does this just to make himself feel better and less insignificant. He couldn’t care less about anyone else who truly suffers. As I said, it’s all about him.

Well-splaining?

There is abundant evidence that Smapti is a coward, a fascist and an idiot. His craven and vicious selfishness extends far beyond his utter inability to relate to or credit the suffering of people with terminal illness, and their loved ones. The story of his mother’s suicide attempt, if true, woukd be a weak excuse for the panoply of moral defects that he represents himself to have.

Smapti, here’s the problem. It’s hard to tell if your posts are motivated by a desire to be different (which is okay) or whether you’re simply trolling. In this thread, I’d vote for the latter. I’d strongly suggest that you address threads such as this with something along these lines from now on.

I appreciate the feelings and concerns of others in this thread, but for me this doesn’t work because I believe that… The key is appreciating the feelings and concerns of others, which you really don’t do at all.

This might help prevent you from getting crushed in the flow like you have been in this thread.

After watching my husband rot away from terminal cancer and dealing with his repeated requests to kill him, I was so happy when I heard this news, and then again happy to see the thread here with right-thinking people applauding this news, and then I see this jackass Smapti. And I remember why Trump is ahead in the polls and Sarah Palin could have been Veep. And what made the world better for a moment is crashed down again.

Jesus Christ, I am so sorry.

Smapti, get your ass into therapy. Your position isn’t based on logic, but on emotion and issues that you have regarding your childhood. (And calling those who jumped out of a burning building “cowardly” is absolutely fucking disgusting and says more about you than it does them. Just go fuck a cactus)

The jump from the government staying out of the way for people to make their own life decisions to government enforced death camps is a whole lot larger than it is from say government enforced execution. Just so you can keep consistent.

The fact that you can force yourself to go to work, and that after just a few hours in bed actually improves your condition means that you don’t have nearly the sort of pain that we are talking about.

Great, so you can make the decision that works best for you and your life and everyone else who believes differently can make the own choice.

I’m happy for the decision as it puts the decision in the hand of the person it matters the most to - and allows for a dignified and planned ‘exit’ in these cases. Being able to be in control at these times can be the most important aspect of it - for oneself and ones family.

Let us note that if not for one poster, this thread would be about 10 comments long. Let’s not let one moron ruin our mood. I’m glad my Gov signed the law.

Absolutely. I was with my mother when she had to make a similar decision about my dad. After he didn’t wake up from surgery after his last major heart attack and was examined by 3 (or 4…some of the details of that painful week are fuzzy) neurologists advising of no detectable brain activity she had to make the call to stop life support. Every bodily function was run by machines and they had talked about what they would choose years prior and she knew it’s what he wanted. They was one of the worst periods of time in my life, but we knew it’s what he wanted and was the only call to make.

You haven’t seen the pogroms in Eugene, or the internment camps of Beaverton, or the bloody Troutdale Death March where 20,000 ethnic northwest-siders were marched into the river by the newly arisen fascist north-eastside government. It took a mere 3 years, just like Hitler’s rise to power, and all because we were granted compassionate end-of-life choices! Our only hope is that Oregon will similarly follow historical precedence and attempt to fight a two-front war against their Washington and California neighbors. There, they will learn the folly of winter campaigns as they crumble at the Seige of Cobaingrad (formerly Aberdeen).
