SC Gov McMaster refuses to issue a Stay Home order for our not too badly affected (YET!) state because:
"Our state is not like everyone else’s state.”
“Every state is different,” McMaster said. “They have different economies, different resources, they have different medical facilities. We are taking a deliberate approach, to be as aggressive as we possibly can at the right time and we’re following the data and the science to do that.”
Elsewhere he said that SC folk were doing a great job with staying home and social distancing by themselves so he didn’t feel the need to issue an official order above the recommendations. Spoiler alert-- No, they are not doing a great job. Hobby Lobby, Lowe’s, Target, Walmart - all are packed and not just for food in the last 2. I have a friend that works in Target, I had to blast into Walmart for something yesterday, and Lowe’s and HL are across the road from where I work. My work is retail also but we are doing curbside service only. It is amazing to me just how many people bitch about that, or come right up to the door and beg to come in for just a second. We are not a grocery store either.
The restrictions he has put into place are too little and too late, I fear.
Yep, your governor is a moron, especially considering that Charlotte is rightsmacknext to SC and lots of people in SC commute to work there. Mecklenburg County, where Charlotte is, has way by far the most cases of Covid-19 in our state. Thinning the herd?
Arkansas has the same thing. But he’s not saying we’re special so much as saying that his more narrowly tailored orders seem to have put us in line with other states. I’m trying to find out if this is the case.
Mainly I object to the order for cities and counties not be allowed to issue orders. At least those in Central Arkansas should be shut down, as well as other major cities.
The mayor of a nearby city has begged him to give some sort of stay ay home order after 2 in his town and 1 in his county.
I seriously read “contiguous 48” as “contagious 48”.
I also grew up in Dixie all but 2 years and change of my childhood was spent there. I miss the good parts about it. I don’t miss what it turned to over the last few years. Sadly, I’m not surprised at how it turned into Trump country nor am I surprised at the current response by the so-called authorities and the public to this pandemic.
This is just the chickens coming home to roost. Conservatives have spent the last forty years building up the idea that you can change reality by wishful thinking.
Yep. Sooner or later, the rubber meets the road. I have long thought that it is bullshit that is going to get us all killed. You can only treat everything out of the people who know what they’re talking about community as fake news for so long before something like this happens.
Things always look OK and about the same at the beginning of an exponential curve. Or even in the middle. There have been so many examples of this line of thinking failing around the world by now that this should be considered criminal negligence/ignorance…
Kentucky elected a Democratic governor in November, thanks to our previous GOP governor being a giant douche. Governor Andy Beshear started early with aggressive measures and daily briefings and has become a model for leadership in a crisis. He’s wildly popular right now and even his critics are having a hard time finding fault with his handling of all this.
To be clear, he’s an unremarkable Democrat that very few people (including myself) were excited about voting for back in November, so much as they were excited to vote against Matt Bevin (who tweeted on March 11, “Chicken Little has just confirmed that the sky IS indeed falling…”). All it took to stand out as a hero in this crisis was to believe experts and believe that government has a valuable role to play.
I’m in deep blue Maryland and we have a Republican governor who recently has been profiled in the New York Times and Washington Post for his leadership:
Those who don’t show backbone are not afraid of that orange clown. They’re afraid of his supporters, the idiots who vote for him and will end their political career this November if they do not cower before the clown.
