Gracepoint/Broadchurch?

I moved my indoor antenna and was able to pick up FOX, so I watched the first 15 minutes of Gracepoint. It was more than deja vu– I think they must be using the exact same script. David Tennant hasn’t shaved or changed his suit since Broadchurch.

While the mom was running to the beach, you saw in the background some of the people who would figure in the unfolding story, and I remembered how complicated it got. Tennant was rude (as expected) to the lady cop when she arrived at the scene. When they dragged the mom away… I turned it off.

Broadchurch was a gripping story that moved with the intense power and speed of a glacier. No way could I sit through it again.

I moved the antenna back to where it only picks up PBS.

That was an enjoyable watch. It was quite gripping when they showed the scenes of the family reacting to the death of their son. The acting was very well done and the show is just gorgeous. I kept thinking, wow, what a shot.

That’s what I thought too. I’m not much into murder mysteries, but I’ll happily watch for the scenery porn aspect. Where were they filming?

I didn’t see Broadchurch, so the mystery is new for me, too, but if it’s as close to the original as everyone is saying, I can’t imagine wanting to watch it twice. It doesn’t seem like it has a lot of repeat viewing value, even though the acting is good.

I think I read it was in British Columbia.

Tennant’s “American” accent is, to be kind, imprecise.

I hope they mention that he grew up in London or something, otherwise people are going to start thinking he’s got some sort of mouth or brain impairment.

Looks like my wife is planning on sticking with this one all the way through, though we watched the original last year.

My guess as to the killer, assuming they actually did change it? Tennant. Because… why not?

Never heard of the original so I’m going into this blind. I made it a point to watch this, because I like the premise and am interested in the outcome. Plus, its only 10 episodes, not a full season of 20+ like a typical Fox show that gets canceled early on.

As for the killer so far, I went to their website and while I know its not usually the most obvious person, there’s no one so far that really arouses much suspicion, so I picked that little kid who deleted all those messages on his phone and his computer. I’m sure he’ll end up just supplying some crucial information like what Danny was talking about or talking to, but no one else really pings my murderer meter so far

Well, I watched the first episode of GP.

Yes, DT was the same rude, mopey jerkwad in GP as BC. He might be ruder.

Yes, DT had an American accent. It’s on a par with my Scots accent. He doesn’t have much vocal inflection or facial affect at all.

Remember the “BLOODY TWITTER” scene in BC? It was like 1/3 the anger and energy.

Also, IIRC, the kid in BC was strangled; the GP kid died of blunt force trauma to the head.

I’m going to catch another and see.

Victoria, BC, Canada–where I am! I kept seeing the filming around this summer.

Apparently, there is CGI scenery as well.

We just watched all eight Broadchurch episodes in three days and loved them. So now we’ve got Gracepoint on, and it’s completely bizarro world…same dialogue, same scene blocking, crappier videography and acting, and the flattest, least inflected American accent in history. In some weird way it’s like watching a really bad dubbed movie.

One would have thought the idea would have been thoroughly discredited back in 1998. (Gus Van Sant is being seen as an unsung genius, apparently.)

Oddly about halfway up the coast between SF and Oregon is Mendocino - which is where Murder She Wrote was filmed. But Canada is cheaper.

Anybody still watching this?

I am, and am enjoying it more than the original. Call me an Americhauvinist or whatever, but I can relate to this group more than the others. And Beth Solano is easy on my eyes.

Many times, Tennant just gives up trying the American accent.

Gonna spoiler box the rest of this… contains Broadchurch spoilers and Gracepoint supposition, so y’all have been warned… I write this with two episodes left, btw.
In BC, I thought the revelation that the killer was the detective’s husband pretty much came out of left field… it was a bit of a WTF moment, imho. If the killer remains the same in GP (and I know the producers have said it isn’t, but what do they know? :stuck_out_tongue: ), it will be an even bigger WTF moment as Anna Gunn’s husband has largely been a non-entity in this show, other than letting his kid get kidnapped.

In the previews for the final two episodes, they showed Vincent (Solano’s employee, IIRC) in handcuffs, so I can pretty much cross him off the list… unless the preview editor is a complete idiot, which cannot be completely discounted, right? As of now, the priest is looking like the main suspect, so he’ll probably be crossed off the suspect list by the time it’s all said and done (though I was thinking he was a likely candidate).

So, what the hell, I still stand by my original (joking) guess and say the killer is Detective Carver.
I guess this week they couldn’t CGI away the 5-pin bowling. Or find any 10-pin bowling in the area.

I think it’s the newspaper editor. She’s been getting an inordinate amount of screen time lately.

I’ve watched most episodes and I think I see some very minor differences from the original. For example, David Tennant’s nightmare in the most recent episode; I don’t remember that from the original. And I don’t remember an equivalent to the scene of Danny’s family going bowling.

I still watch it, love it in fact. I’ve got a few ideas on who it might be but its probably too obvious. I have no support for them other than that they act suspicious

Are there actually any clues that point to one or more people or is it all just guesswork and we’ll find out some off-screen clue or reason that points to someone?

I’d honestly say guesswork, having watched the British version. No idea if they American one is solvable, though.

The real story is media intrusion and fakery, the star is the town, the cast provide intricate overlapping storylines.

Don’t worry too much about clues, enjoy the journey - it gets there in the end.

p.s. series two - no spoilers. Filming is complete.

Anyone want to spoiler the last 30 minutes of the last episode (11/20)? I guess that was Obama’s speech nite and I got the last 30 mins of Bones and the first 30 of GP. Just any major developments will do. Last scene I saw was the creepy trailer/dog lady knockin on the policewoman’s door and the kid answering.
