Grammar and Glamour

Are the words Grammar and Glamour related to each other?

Amazingly enough, yes. Although I don’t really understand the etymology that American Heritage gives: “[Scots magic spell ,alteration of grammar (from the association of learning with magic).]”

I did find a dissenting opinion though, that went with “Scot. glamour, glamer; cf. Icel. gl['a]meggdr one who is troubled with the glaucoma”. So I don’t think the linguists are quite sold on it either.

The reason I brought up the OP was that I had read that the monks in the middle ages spoke Latin and the general public did not. When the public heard latin being spoken, it sounded very mysterious. When something appeared mysterious, it was said to be Glamourous or spoken in Latin.

Sounds like your Scot has a Japanese accent.
