Grayer's Disease

A woman my husband works with found out that she has this. I’m not even sure that’s what it’s called. That’s what it sounded like she said to him. Apparently, it’s a colon problem. She says that they’re going to remove her colon. I ask because I’m worried (as is Mr. Jeannie) and he said that she didn’t seem to want to discuss it too much, so he didn’t press the issue. So, is there a good place to find info on this? She said the doctor told her that the problem was that she became a vegetarian. I would think that being a vegetarian would be healthier for the colon.

A quick internet search didn’t turn up any hits on Grayer’s disease. There’s a Grave’s disease, a disease of the thyroid, and there’s a not uncommon colon condition known as Crone’s disease. Are you sure you got the name right?

Removing the colon is a drastic remedy – it must be a very serious condition.

As far as vegetarianism I would have thought it was better for your colon, too, but maybe not. There is certainly more roughage in a vegetable, i.e, high-fiber, diet. Is that a problem?

Personally I’m a vegetarian once removed. I only eat meat from animals that were vegetarians.

Could it have been Crohn’s disease?

Sorry, that’s Crohn’s disease, also known as inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS). There’s a lot of info available on the net, most of which also covers other, related conditions. Maybe you can get some good info there.

Actually, no. That’s part of the problem finding stuff. I guess she was talking too low or too quickly. My husband wasn’t sure he got the name right.
I did ask again about the veggie thing. He didn’t understand it either, but I guess the doctor told her that it was something she’s had since childhood and that it was the change in diet that caused the problem. I checked the link on “Chrone’s disease.” Maybe that’s it. If Mr. Jeannie sees her tomorrow, he’ll ask again about the name.
