Great Book-"The House of Mondavi"!

I am reading this, the story of the Mondavi wine family.
It is an amazing tale-the Mondavi family broke apart in the 2nd generation (Robert vs. Peter).
Robert went on to found his own winery, but the intrigue and family politics followed him.
Was this family the inspiration for “Dynasty”?
Anyway, I have a question (for California dopers). Robert Mondavi virtually made California a name for high-quality wines. In the 1990’s, he had the idea to use coastal-grown grapes to supplement the (Napa) valley grown grapes. Experts (at the time) denounced this.
But I find the coastal varietals to be excellent-as good as the valley-grown stuff.
Is this current opinion in California?
