Great Dane

Hope you enjoyed sleeping in your bed because it’s his now. Mark my words!

Handsome fellah. Congrats.

You’ll go crazy worrying about bloat. I had a Husky pass away years ago and looked into it. Opposite advice everywhere. Mixed diet, steady diet ,these foods, those foods. Just worry about a healthy diet and get a food dish he can eat from comfortably while standing. If it looks like he’s stooping too much, raise it up.

I know! - I don’t want to stress over it. I wonder if it’s worth having the surgery done where they anchor his stomach down.

Thanks! We had sleeping issues last night so he slept with me. I was a bit cramped to say the least - took an Aleve as soon as I got up. Probably a HUGE mistake.

i was going to suggest this when they did his neuter…but then saw the neuter had already happened.

Yeah, you WILL go crazy trying to figure out whether or not you should do the stomach procedure based on internet research. Go talk to your vet instead, then just for shits and giggles ask a second vet. Or see if there’s a Dane breeder in your area with a good reputation and ask them. Facebook is great for that, find the breeder’s page and send a query in, most people love to talk about their passion and a breeder can give you an idea of what your chances are of him getting it and who knows, might even have an idea where he came from. Dog breeding is usually a fairly small circle. One question, did he come with a microchip that predates the shelter? Around here a good breeder will chip every pup in a litter before they go to their homes, makes it dead easy to keep track of who’s who. If he didn’t have one, shame on the breeder.

We don’t have this many K9s, but this is exactly what happens in the same circumstances.

Been there, done than many, many times over the years!

The breeder did not chip him. He was chipped at the shelter before we took him home.

Hmmm, I’m having my doubts about that breeder. When I finally broke down and bought my cattle dog pup he was chipped, the entire litter had had their first shots and the preliminary AKC registration had been done and included in his puppy pack. And this is a fairly casual breeder too, keeps like three breeding bitches and one or two males at a time, maybe four or five litters per year total. Great Danes are spendy pups, he should have had all that done before going out the door. Then again, the breeder should also have had a return agreement to keep him out of the shelter but there you go. Well, their loss is your gain! When do we get to see the home at last pics?

Making himself comfy on the couch. He has a sock on his leg because he licked the IV site so much he made it bleed.

I call this his circus cage! It’s 54x35x45. He loves it. He went in on his own after we set it up. He sleeps in there at night. Luckily I don’t have to use that room for anything else.

His 1940s movie star shot!

At the office! I’ve been bringing him in with me every day. He’s been a very good boy.

Very good dog having a very good time!

What a handsome doggo, I want to scroomfle his ears and thump his ribs! My big dog is a lab/husky mix who for whatever reason, is incredibly impressed by Great Danes. Any time he sees one he goes into full fawning fanboy mode and turns into a big puppy–and this is an old grumpy dog who does not do the puppy thing often. Once at the big Thousand Acre off leash park he ran up to a group of three GDs and I thought I was never going to be able to get him to go home. Congrats again on your awesome doggo score!

I had a Pit Bull/GSD mix who was not treat-motivated. But she turned out to be very play-motivated. A little tug-o-war with a rope toy was the best reward for doing something well. That dog had excellent manners, a perfect lie-down-stay-- I could walk 30 meters away, with my back to her, dangling her favorite toy from my hand, and she would not get up until called. She could do several tricks as well, including roll-over. She had some separation anxiety, otherwise, I’m sure she could have passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen test.

And, FWIW, we also had a 130lb. Giant Schnauzer who lived to be almost 13. She was a wheelchair service dog who retired with us. We had to re-teach her how to be an ordinary dog. Had to lock all doors around her, since she could open them.

Definitely. All my dogs have managed to be black & white, albeit, the Giant Schnauzer was about 99% black, with just a white patch on her chest. Not something I’ve done on purpose, it just worked out that way.
