The first time I remember, to a certainty, hearing “Great googlie-mooglie!” was on Zappa’s Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow. But I have an impression that I might have heard it in a cartoon when I was a kid. (Or maybe I’m conflating it with “Wavy chitlin’ gravy!”
There’s something wrong with my brain, in that whenever I hear Martin Luther King Jr.'s “Free at last” speech, I imagine him not saying “Great God in heaven! We’re free at last!”; but “Great googlie mooglie! We’re free at last!” Probably something about the cadence of the line, and that “great googlie mooglie” happened to be in my head one time I heard it.
When I was a kid there was a cartoon featuring hillbilly animals. I think one of them was called “Possum Puss”. Anyway, one of them would exclaim, “Wavy chitlin’ gravy!” from time to time.
Wavy Gravy was a counter-culture figure around that time (or before); but I was too young to have heard of him.
For some reason, I associate the phrase “Great Googly Moogly” with Casey Casem. I know I’ve heard him use it, but I can’t for the life of me remember where. On that Negativland track, maybe?
First time I ever heard “great googly moogly” was in a Snickers ad from the late 1990’s, in which the football team’s coach has sadly misspelled the team’s name in the paint in the end zone.
Larry Mudd, I hate to say it, but every time I see your nick, I can’t help but think of that Dave Chappel skit.
Nothing on you, just my own corrupted mind.
I’ve never seen the Chappel show – could you elaborate?
A bit of an odd coincidence – last week an old girlfriend said I reminded her of the Star Trek: The Animated Series episode where Nurse Chapel scored some MDMA off Harry Mudd in order to get some hot Vulcan lovin’.
Mud butt being the condition you get after consuming mass amounts of ribs.
An African American sleep aid from the skit.
I’ve been trying to find reference via Google, but no luck.
