Great Realistic Minimalist Horror

As Above, So Below - “Blair Witch”-style found footage, with a similar slow buildup. Some very brief, but intense gore. It’s about people casually wandering into Hell, so some gore is going to happen.

Savageland - low budget mockumentary about a zombie attack near the US-Mexico border. No jump scares or gore at all, it’s primarily the subject matter, dealt with completely seriously, that’s scary.

Jacob’s Ladder - a strange and disturbing journey. A legitimately good movie. (and from a technical standpoint, interesting because they used no post-production special effects, everything was done using practical effects and camera manipulation)
