Great start to the week

You know how sometimes you stand up too fast, and get all dizzy? Well, that happened to me this morning. Only I got so dizzy I actually blacked out, fell over, and smacked my face into a milk crate. I don’t actually remember the falling part, but I do recall feeling my forehead pressed firmly against the crate, while I was unable to move for a good few seconds. There are no marks or anything, but it hurt.

Oh, and did I mention that this happened when I got out of bed? The first thing I did this week was fall over. That can’t be a good sign. Here’s hoping it only gets better.

That sucks. It happened to my brother last year (while he was climbing up on some playground equipment*), and he had a seizure. For a while, doctors were assuming that he’d suffer seizures for the rest of his life. They have since upgraded his condition to “probably not.”

*He sells it. He doesn’t play on it.

One day at work, my sister was in her cubicle when her printer stopped working. Unfortunately for her, her printer sat on her desk underneath her overhead cabinet.

Stood up and leaned over her printer. Fixed the problem. Brought her head up too fast without thinking.

WHAM!

Right into her overhead cab. Shocked her so bad she recoiled forward.

WHAM!

Whacked her head right back into her printer.

WHAM! Dammit!! WHAM!!! DAAAAAAMIT!!!

You are very fortunate. Head injuries can be very serious. Years ago I got up quickly from a desk chair in an office (or so they tell me), plopped back into the swivel chair which spun around and I subsequently fell on the floor and hit my forehead. I still have a bump there, over 10 years later, to prove it.

What followed was trauma hospital, then brain trauma unit of another hospital for rehab and a year’s “vacation” since I had a seizure and therefore couldn’t drive for one year in the state I live and so couldn’t work in the crazy suburbs where you have to drive everywhere…

Actually I am fortunate as well. My memory loss was short term and I am “myself”. And once my long term disability kicked in and I didn’t have to worry about money, I kind of had the best, most relaxing year of my adult life.

Hey, I had a similar thing happen about 3 weeks ago, micturation syncope. Basically I “blacked out when I peed”, by sympathetic overload. I got all stressed out and worried I was late to class, and I only had 2 hours of sleep, ran over to the bathroom, and then woke up on the floor.
Apparently I had peed into the toliet and either fallen asleep or just passed out. Woke up though, took vitals and all, and I was fine.

It happens. As long as no head trauma from the fall, that’s the key big scary part…

I ran through O’Hare to catch a flight many years ago. With my low blood pressure, going from sitting to running to stopping didn’t work out so well. I remember asking at the counter if I’d missed the flight (I had), and the next thing I knew I was on the floor. Smacked into one of those big windows like a fly. Fortunately, all I broke was a little bone in my hand. Damn, but I’m careful about that narrowing-tunnel feeling now.

Postural hypotension, AKA orthostatic hypotension. If you take BP meds, it’s time to get your dosage adjusted down.

A year or so ago I stepped outside on an cool evening and got dizzy, hit my head on the sidewalk and passed out. Turned out I had a bout of A-Fib which caused the dizziness.

Well, now I at least feel less weird, knowing it happens to other people. Also, it least it wasn’t a heart thing and there was no head damage. And, VunderBob, I’m not on any meds, so no worries there.

That exact same thing happened to me awhile back, Regallag. I’d just woken up and was getting out of bed to head for a shower, the world got all fuzzy and “headrush-y” and then I was on the floor. My husband was all, “Are you OK?” and I was all “how the hell’d I get down here?”

It was fast, but funny. Since I kind of swooned down, I think I banged my knee, but didn’t hit my head. Maybe I was lucky.
