Great time travel movies - 10 years later

I just watched Looper and really liked it. It’s put me in the mood for some more good time travel movies.

I did a search here for a suggestion list. The last thread I could find was from 2003 but my search-fu is terrible so I might have missed one. Anyway, bring on your suggestions and if you are so motivated, a few words why you recommend it.

Terminator.

Time Bandits.

Where is the list?

12 Monkeys

Somewhere in Time

Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure

Time After Time

Primer

The Final Countdown

del, duplicate post

La jetée - The inspiration for 12 Monkeys. Very cool French short film.

Safety Not Guaranteed - Quirky independent movie with Aubrey Plaza. Charming.

Sound of My Voice - Independent movie written by and starring Brit Marling about journalists who infiltrate a cult and find more than they bargained for. Unique and interesting.

Timecrimes - a Spanish thriller

The Time Traveler’s Wife - Bittersweet love story about, you guessed it, a time traveler and his wife. Definitely more of a romance than a SF adventure.

Back to the Future (pts. I, II & III)

The Time Machine (1960 original is better, but the 2002 remake is also quite good.)

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (charming & fun movie, despite the silly 80’s-style hair and environmentalism plot)

Groundhog Day

It was miles better than the TNG movie that had time travel.

About Time

Hot Tub Time Machine

Groundhog Day

Frequency

I second The Terminator, Safety Not Guaranteed, 12 Monkeys, and Primer.

Devil’s Pass - Surprisingly good horror movie about students who retrace the steps of those who perished in the Dyatlov Pass incident. Not really a time travel movie, but it references time travel in an interesting way.

Source Code - Action/adventure with Jake Gyllenhaal. Pretty decent major movie with a Groundhog Day - esque form of time travel.

Groundhog Day - You’ve probably seen this movie again and again, but, hey, it’s a time travel movie, and is well worth recommending. Upon review: Double ninjaed!

The Three Stooges Meet Hercules

Ok, I know it’s not a great movie, but is has the Stooges in it.

Groundhog Day

Thanks for the suggestions - I’ve got my Netflix queue loaded up.

I would also reccomend these. Both are well worth watching. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve seen from Brit Marling.

A wonderful time travel anime series is “Steins;Gate”. Mind-bending sci-fi with heart and humor.

Got mixed reviews, but I liked it too. It wasn’t just a simple romance by two people from different times - the time travel was something that deeply affected their relationship and was integral to it, including foreknowledge, visits to/from older/younger versions of each other, and so on. Well done, IMHO.

The Butterfly Effect, by the way.

TimeCop with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Mia Sara.

But you need to also watch where time travel fiction began. Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthurs Court. Rent the movie and read the book.
