Yeah, it could have been better. Still, curling!
How is it we’ve gone 81 posts and nobody has mentioned Heaven Can Wait?
Right there in the Pantheon with Breaking Away, Bull Durham & Field of Dreams (if you consider that a sports movie).
Another one worth seeing in 1970-whatever: Bang the Drum Slowly.
Hey, fun trivia question: Six actors who have played catchers have gone on to be nominated for an Academy Award:
Kevin Costner (Bull Durham), “Dances with Wolves”
Geena Davis (League of Their Own), “Thelma & Louise”
James Earl Jones (Bingo Long’s Traveling All-Stars), “Great White Hope”
Tom Berenger (Major League), “Platoon”
Robert Deniro (Bang the Drum Slowly), six nominations
John C. Reilly (For the Love of the Game), “Chicago”
With reference to that wonderful trivia question:
Geena Davis also won an Oscar for “The Accidental Tourist.”
“Major League” was released in 1989, 3 years after “Platoon”, so the wording “gone on to be nominated for an Academy Award” doesn’t work for him.
Ah, excellent point (and that’s not the only case). Change it to, “… have also…”
It is an excellent film and I was coming here to mention it.
It is. As I said, I don’t like (American) football, but I really like/love every football movie I’ve seen, and this one was particularly moving and inspirational.
And yeah, I can’t believe I forgot Heaven Can Wait! It’s one of my favorite Warren Beatty movies! He’s such a dreamboat, as is Julie Christie, and it’s so funny.
I didn’t know that, thanks! Hoop Dreams is pretty amazing.
I dunno why, but I think some of the greatest comedies ever made were sports movies:
Caddyshack
Slapshot
Happy Gilmore
Have you watched Slapshot recently? It doesn’t hold up well IMHO. If it weren’t for the Hanson brothers, it’s pretty much unwatchable if you ask me.
Pride
Seabiscuit
The Natural
Has anyone else seen The Blindside? It was excellent in every way.
Speaking of surfing, I haven’t seen mention of the film that Blue Crush was a remake of (with a couple twists)–Ride the Wild Surf.
I would also put forth two Olympic Marathon films.
Running – with Michael Douglass
The Games – with Ryan O’Neal
and of course crewing is mildly represented with, Oxford Blue.
I would love to know are there any Australian rules football movies available in the U.S.?
Golf: Legend of Bagger Vance
perhaps I am more of a Matthew Modine fan then I realized…
Sailing: Wind
Wrestling: Vision Quest
Football: Any Given Sunday
