Greatest sports movie?

I’m from Minnesota. I enjoy curling, so “Men With Brooms” has a soft spot in my head. OTOH, my cousin was a trainer with the North Stars and “Slap Shot” holds a special place.

Yours? And why are your stars better than the Hanson Brothers? Because, really, they aren’t.

I came in to mention Slap Shot. No argument here. I would put Brian’s Song at #2.

One does not mention “Brian’s Song.” It’s not for everybody else. :frowning:

Vision Quest

lemme recall:

the first olympiad (title?) about spiridon luis
fighting czar (roller derby)
old man and the sea (off-shore fishing)
brian’s song (football)
one on one (basketball)
rollerball (rollerball)
something for joey (football)
the coach (basketball)
chariots of fire (track)
rocky (boxing)
ice castles (figure skating)
the champ (boxing)
the natural (baseball)
body and soul (boxing)
color of money (pool)
cutting edge (figure skating)

enough!

#1 chariots of fire (best movie)
#2 the champ (best acting)
#3 the mickey rooney movie (most inspiring)

As I’ve said before the best sports movies are the ones where the heroes lose the big game. (Or, there’s The Hustler, a tragedy where Fast Eddie wins his rematch with Fats.)

special mention: cool hand luke (barb wire hurdling.)

We have a run with Paul Newman.

Hoosiers

I couldn’t care less for horse racing, but I love the movie Seabiscuit.

My favorite baseball movies are Major League & Bull Durham.

The (original) Bad News Bears

Raging Bull

Personal fave: Jim Thorpe All American

But Ruffian is right out. The other movie at which men can cry.

Loved that damned horse.

I’m quite fond of Blood of Heroes.

I’m a sucker for The Natural.

Olympiad

Okay, it’s half Nazi propaganda, but aside from that…

Complained to a Jewish co-worker when Olympiad was being shown in the lunch room by our former Assyrian terrorist co-workers.

“It’s Nazi propaganda!”

“But it’s BRILLIANT Nazi propaganda.”

FTR, when a guy complains about a dimension on your drawing and you can tell from his eyes that he’s killed before and would not hesitate to kill again, you fix the dimension. And his wife made a hell of a cup of coffee.

I have to remember to do a thread asking for votes for the “Best Nazi”, or “Who’s your favorite Nazi?”

A toss up between Raging Bull and Senna

Victory.

I mean, come on, Sly Stallone as a prison camp goalie, helping a feisty group of scamps escape the Nazis? AND Pele?
