In the past couple of months, I (a US citizen by birth) have started getting spam e-mails to my work account offering green cards. Has anyone else noticed this new spam. Granted, I still get e-mails offering to over-endow my member (how did they know my insecurity is what bothers me).
Is this a new form of data-mining. I am a scientist and figure they might be hitting their target audience through journal/conference contact info.
There’s nothing new about it - it’s literally the oldest spam in the world. The very first Internet spam was for green card lotteries. I actually remember this one - the ad was posted to almost every Usenet newsgroup, most of which had nothing to do with immigration.
I think the current green card spammers are just using the standard e-mail databases. Spammers don’t care that 99% of the recipients have no interest in their product, as long as they also reach the remaining 1%.
