Green drinks

I’m under my opthamolgist’s orders to follow a diet consistant with the National Eye Institute’s AREDS2 study.

I’m throwing that out there to hopefully ward off most “juicing doesn’t work” or “smoothies have more calories than you think” type comments. I do eat more salads and put spinach in my sandwiches, but I need some variety.

I must eat leafy greens, fruit, and nuts every day. I’ve found that drinking them for breakfast is a good way to do it. I have been having the same basic drink for two months now. It tastes good, but it looks like an aquarium was left unplugged for two weeks. That’s ok, I put it in an opaque container and spare my co-workers. I’d like some variety, though. I need suggestions.

My basic recipe is 1 c kale or spinach, an small orange and a small apple (or two of either), 1 c V8 Healthy Greens juice, and a handful of frozen mixed berries. I add a dash of cinnamon which helps disguise the “green” taste and a T of chia seeds. Then I blast the hell out of it (Ninja IQ).

Recipes? Ideas? Anyone else drinking these types of things? I like the V8 because it’s low in calories (60), low in sugar (25g), and not outrageously expensive. I’m open to other ideas.

So, a Midori Splice isn’t what you are looking for?

Midori? Nyet, commrade. Not while there are daquiris and margaritas. Or for that matter vodka and chocolate mint ice cream.

Ha, I was prepared to respond with Midori cocktails and Green River soda.

However, it makes sense that overall good vitamin/mineral intake would keep eyesight from deteriorating as quickly. The latest opthamalogical tidbits I’ve seen are encouraging people–kids, adults with poor eyesight, anyone, to make a point of having frequent, regular intervals of…staring and focusing into the distance. As in, too much time at a fixed viewpoint (books, computer, tv) can indeed make your eyes worse. And we laughed when our parents told us not to sit too close to the television… :smack:

Scotty and Data could maybe hook you up…

Into a glass of ice cubes add vodka and orange juice- not all the way to the top. Now add blue curacao and stir just a bit. It turns the coolest cartoon green. It’s healthy, trust me.

Midori makes a great addition to Pineapple-Orange-Banana juice.

I used to call it “anti-freeze” back when anti-freeze was green.

As to switching out the V8 juice, I think it depends on whether you want to add more whole fruit. You can just add more citrus for the high water content, or a splash of water. Like to your basic recipe, just throwing in a banana and extra orange or apple would probably replace the V8 with a little water added.

To go the other way and be a little more savory, replace some spinach with kale, and add a lemon and some peppery arugula - mitigate the lemon if it’s too sour with a bit of honey or something like agave or rice syrup. Or extras of the sweeter berries you have.

When I was in the naval reserve, we had a drink called a Starboard Running Light, equal parts creme de menthe and vodka.

Here I was thinking Chartreuse cocktails…

Dr. Fuhrman’s chocolate smoothie tastes & feels just like a chocolate shake.

I’m skeptical, but I will try that this weekend or maybe Thursday.

Sea Dragon: I’ve been trying green tea with a tsp of honey and a squeeze of lime. That’s been less sweet, but still flavorful. I’ve wondered about the savory, but I’m kind of afraid of it. I don’t know why. I drink tomato juice all the time with no qualms (and no vodka).

Bartender: “You know, we have a cocktail named after you.”
Grasshopper: “You have a cocktail named Howard?!”

 Best thing I’ve heard all day!

You could vary that up a fair bit with mangoes, bananas, honey , and a bit of cardamom.
I’ve done a variation of thiswith plain Greek yogurt and it was quite tasty.
