Green velvet curtains with gold fringe (or Help with a costume)

My daughter has decided that for her swan song as a Trick-or-Treater, she wants to be Carol Burnett. More specifically, she wants to be Carol Burnett as Starlet O’Hara, from the spoof Went With the Wind.

We found a long skirt, we can get a hoop and curtain rods, but those green velvet curtains with the gold fringe and matching tiebacks are proving very hard to find.

Anyone have any they would like to get rid of? Or know of a place we can find them?

Thanks for whatever help (or encouragement) you can provide!

I don’t have any, but if you check a place like Hobby Lobby or a fabric store you can often get pretty large remnants of upholstery fabric that don’t cost too much. They sell fringe by the yard, too, and it’s not very expensive.

Sorry, this is encouragement but not help. I just thought it was so funny that the first thing I thought of when I saw your post title was “Someone’s dressing up as Carol Burnett doing Scarlett?”

Glad you’re passing the classics on to your kids.

Would you be able to sew them yourself if you can’t find them? I can’t see them being all too hard to do (since it’s basically curtains and not a dress).

Great idea for a costume, though.

“Ah just saw it in the window and Ah couldn’t resist it.”

Kudos to you! One of the best costume ideas ever!

Glad to hear the next generations of Dopers are being raised right.

Ahem. I can help you.

I dressed up as Carol Burnett as Scarlett O’Hara for our millennium party in December 1999. (Hence the handle.) I still have the whole handmade costume – wooden curtain rod with finials, size 14 (I think) dark green velvet underdress, green curtains and gold fringe, and even matching earrings that I made out of tassels. I think I even still have the hoop, which I ended up not using.

I didn’t use the dark green velvet, though – I got some lighter-green upholstery fabric with a paisley pattern and made my own “curtains.” So it looks a little different from the original, but good enough for trick-or-treating.

I can’t imagine that I would ever have occasion to use this costume again (all my friends have seen it!), so I would be happy to send the whole kit and kaboodle to you.

E-mail me if you’re interested!

That is incredibly generous of you, Scarlett. Thanks!

Hmm, it just occurred to me – If I get rid of this costume, does that mean I have to change my name? :dubious:

No, Miss Scarlett. I just means you need to copy her riding habit. Or just go around in a corset and peticoats.
