Question-for those of you in the UK, how much greater or lesser was the Queen Mum’s funeral? I would think, or at least hope, it would be more of a loss. Unless, of course, that you consider she was over 100 years old, while Diana was far too young.

It was pathetic enough here, chowder. Shrines of flowers in front of the Union Flag on the road to the art museum in Philly (that I cannot remember the name of but has lots of different nations flags). People coming up to me in the street when they heard my accent and commiserating with me for my loss, tears in their eyes.

The reason for royalty or celebrity or whatever is so that people have iconic figures around which to organize so that they can have some common bond. Nobody knows Joe the local town hero in the next county. It is around these positions of authority these figures that civilization was built, like it or not. If you feel like society somehow let you down by organizing this way, that’s all well and good, I don’t understand why hating on Diana gives you some jollies.

It’s just fun to hate.

Yes, absolutely. and too bad of those landed gentry persons attempting to limit the power of the king.

Far too much is made of the Runnymede document and the power of the Barons to limit the power of the monarchy since John simply ignored it.

It’s the dreams of the masses who made Diana what she was–and their relentless obsession for pieces of her.

Then there was the relentless shit pumping by the media, I personally found it intrusive, and just because the masses wanted a piece of her, it still does not justify the continuing existance of the royals, it just means there are lots of stupid donkeys in the UK.

IMO, the world would be better off with more Diana-like people pulling in $ for social causes than with more contentious, bigoted, pompous asses who want to stick it to the Man and end up working for the Man instead.

Much of the money to be made from marketing the image of her was made by ‘the man’ anyway.

Sorry but I do not think charity is the way forward, the idea that we abandon our social responsibilities until some ‘celebrity’ tells us otherwose seems to me to be pretty stupid.

The real answer is that we are educated enough to have some awareness of the issues, to have some understanding of our collective role, its about us as a society making the correct choices instead of being dumb enough to be led by the nose.

Education in the UK is an industrial process designed to produce citizens to fulfill the requirements of business first and formemost. The idea of enlightenment takes a back seat, from the selling of school playing fields, to a reduction in the number of field trips to the continuing change from hard subjects such as the sciences etc to others that are mainly about opinions such as the ‘ologies’.

Diana actually had access to the best education available, she didn’t even attain the minimum standards, lets put it this way, Charles was certainly never attracted to her mind.
One could say that she had one thing in common with the masses, her poor intellect, but that would be too hard on the masses.

Like it or not, Diana was a symbol to many people.

They should have stuck it to the Man, and given up their power and prestige voluntarily so that another group could then abuse the power and position it would grab. Social and political systems evolve, as I’m sure you’re aware. The Red Flag doesn’t seem to have done the Russian peasants (comrade!) or the North Koreans too much good in past decades.

The limited the power of the king to affect the feudal landowners. It made sod all difference for the schmucks at the bottom. When you are getting shat on from a great height, you don’t really care if it is a royal arse or a nobleman’s arse from where the shite is flowing.

You were the one who brought up Magna Carta. I simply told you there were much better examples from English and British history of the refusal of the oppressed to continue to consent to their lot.

And oddly enough, the failure of Leninist/Stalinist or Maoist communism doesn’t actually make me any more willing to tug my forelock and accept my place in society, cowtowing to them who were born better than me.
