In an old column, a reader asked about non-sexist greetings for business letters, and Cecil quoted Letitia Baldridge, who suggested switching to a memo-like format.
Well, Ms. Baldridge wasn’t too far off the mark. The quandary presented at the time has since been solved by what is called the “simplified format.” A simplified letter uses full block format,
inserts a subject line between the inside address and the body of the letter, and omits the salutation and the complimentary close.
However, it is still signed and contains the writer’s typed name.
Any technical or business writing textbook will have an example of this format.
