Unlike most dopers, I actually liked U571.
It seems the big complaint is that it isn’t an accurate recounting of recovering a (not THE) Engima machine. Mainly, that it has US Navy doing it rather than Brits.
My point: Who cares? It never billed itself as a true story. Do people complain that The Dirty Dozen never happened? It’s just a war movie, not the war movie.
Does The Imitation Game get such grief for not having any Poles in it? Does The Battle of the Bulge get derided for having the battle of the Ardennes forest in a desert plain in Spain (with no rain on the plain)? So why does U571 deserve more grief than the others?
