Kendogger: I’ve heard that Fenway Park has a ground-rule triple and is the only park in the majors with one. What is it?
Rob Neyer: People ask me this all the time, and despite searching the Red Sox media guide I still don’t know. The other night, the Sox broadcasters were talking about it. They didn’t know either, so I’m wondering if this isn’t some sort of urban myth (“My bruthuh’s friend’s cousin knew a guy who sahr a ground-rule triple at Fenway Pahk.”).
Anyone know anything about this? If it’s true, I’d have to assume the green monster is somehow involved.
There’s more text (not much though) then what I posted below. Still, it’s the only bit about Boston and the ground rule triple I could find. If you want to see all of it the link is:
I believe the situation described above took place in Pittsburgh, not Boston.
A “ground rule” is a stadium-specific rule designed to cover some special situation that the rule book doesn’t provide for.
For example, in domed stadiums, balls can hit loudspeakers or catwalks. Such situations aren’t described in the rules, so a “ground rule” is established.
The UL about the Fenway Park ground rule triple involved hitting a ball off of the ladder attached to the LF field fence (aka The Green Monster).
