Groups where female is not the lead singer?

Not their regular drummer, but I do love that Dave Grohl and the rest of the Foo Fighters let 11-year-old Nandi Bushell, who had challenged Grohl to a drum-off previously, take the drums for a number in a live concert.

Really, I’m just including it because it’s a happy story and god knows we need more of those.

DNCE of “Cake by the Ocean” fame has a female lead guitarist and a Jonus brother as the lead singer

And Tracy Wentworth has been their regular bassist since 1990.

She records and tours with many others in between.

I saw Todd Rundgren performing on some talk show maybe 20 years ago (Probably Conan O’Brien), being backed up by Melissa Auf du Mar (from Hole). Junior Brown is usually backed up by his wife Tanya Rae and other bandmates.

The New Pornographers Have two women in the band, but almost all the lead vocals are by males.

And one of the women is Neko Case.

Crash Test Dummies had a female keyboardist.

Meshugga Beach Party has a female keyboardist. Nobody on vocals.

Coal Chamber comes to mind - original bassist Rayna Foss left after the first album and was replaced by another female bass player, Nadja Peulen, before the band broke up in 2002. They then hired a third woman bass player, Chela Rhea Harper, when they briefly reunited in 2011.

Bobbie Nelson (Sister Bobbie) joined Willie Nelson and Family as a pianist in the early 70s and played with the band until passing away earlier this year.

Electric Wizard

And they just got a new fiddle player. Now it’s Natalya Kay.

When Kevin Gilbert put together a touring band to promote Toy Matinee in 1990, his girlfriend played keyboards, while Gilbert sang lead.

While Andrea Corr was the lead singer of the band The Corrs, her two sisters played drums and violin. Their brother James was the lead guitarist.

Naah, Butcher is as much a vocalist as Shields is.

I’d add Superchunk, The Men They Couldn’t Hang, The Mars Volta.

In the Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, has Breezy Peyton playing the washboard. AFAIK, she doesn’t sing.

You also have (had) Lorna Doom of the Germs.

I’ve hung out with the band after shows. People always ask why they don’t feature Breezy on vocals for a song and she just laughs.

And very briefly, Dottie Danger (Belinda Carlisle) on drums.

The War on Drugs has Eliza Hardy Jones on keyboard.

Just thought of one: In Måneskin the bassist is Victoria de Angelis (female) but the vocalist is Damiano David (male).

The Negro Problem (don’t be turned off by the name — great band, fronted by composer Stew, who has been seriously compared to Cole Porter).
