A friend has a Spartan Juniper that he wants to grow in a spiral (corkscrew) shape and he thinks I know how to do this. Unfortunately, I do not. I have not seen it, but apparently this is a common thing to do with these plants. Any plant experts out there who know how to do it?
I always assumed it was done with a pair of shears.
Use heavy wire and tie the new growth to the wire. Bend the wire to the form you wish. It will take years to grow a large plant, just like a non shaped one does. he will however need to tie new growth to the form as it occurs. Make sure that the branches don’t get damaged by fastners as the tree grows and expands.
He just prune it to shape, if he doesn’t want to have the trunk spiral also.
Aha! Thanks.
