Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Seen it Thread (no spoilers in OP)

Love it. Best Marvel film since Endgame (not that I didn’t like the last Spidey flick, but it had a bit too much fanservice to love wholeheartedly).

One question, though: what happened to Quill’s jet boots and helmet? He really could have used them at certain points of the film

James Gunn actually specifically addressed this, he said he left the helmet in knowhere when they ran off to save Rocket and the rocket boots had long since been replaced by better jetpacks made by Rocket. Which apparently he also didn’t bring. Basically “they left in a hurry”.

Plot-induced forgetfulness. You can’t have that dramatic heel-face turn if there’s not a life to save.

Well, Dave Bautista wanted off the GotG treadmill, so this feels unlikely.

Maybe animation work. But no more live-action Drax (without recasting, anyway).

FWIW, Quill’s Helmet was destroyed in GotG 2. The fact that he had it back in Infinity War was actually the goof (but there was time for him to get/make a new one so a minor goof).

Something funny that was pointed out to me was that clearly the Powers that Be in the MCU really wanted Thor to be part of the GotG but both James Gunn and Taika Waititi couldn’t undo that fast enough.

ME: “Was this rated R, and I didn’t notice?”

Story-beat wise, this had a lot in common with Picard. Fake-outs…a bit too long…very satisfying.

I most liked Nebula’s story arc through all three GOTG movies and two Avengers movies. You wouldn’t expect someone who started out a remorseless killer in GOTG 1 would end up laughing and dancing at the end of GOTG 3

Like others have mentioned, more than one time tears threatened to leave my eyes while watching the movie. I liked that every member of the Guardians was given a moment to shine in their own way. It is not easy to do with an ensemble cast, but somehow they pulled it off in this film. Overall, I could tell at the end that it had been a long movie, because there was a lot of story crammed in, but there was no point where I felt like it dragged.

One thing they kept in all three that I liked was the slow motion team walk that was not at all heroic. In the first movie it had Nebula yawning and in this one they are carrying a passed out Quill, which was a nice callback.

There was a lot to enjoy and a lot to see without resorting to a necessarily big CGI fight at the end. I enjoyed it and will likely watch it again.

I saw it yesterday. Some random thoughts:

I assume one of them was the face reveal at the end… what was the other?

I assumed he died in the big explosion at the end. As Batman once noted, there’s a difference between killing someone and not saving them.

I was struck by how quickly Rocket went from being at death’s door to leaping around doing action moves. Those medpacks must be really good.

In general, I really liked it. It was quite dusty in the cinema though… my eyes were watering a bit…

Oh. We left after the scene with the new Guardians line-up squaring up to stop the stampede. What did I miss?

Quill having breakfast with gramps, whining about lawn mowing.

Thanks @squeegee. Sounds like I didn’t miss too much.

Also it faded to “the legendary Starlord will return”

This also goes along with the oldie:
DCU: The world isn’t ready for a Wonder Woman movie.
MCU: Here’s a talking raccoon.

There’s a surprising amount of depth to these characters. They do a great job making us like them and care about them.

Except for Groot, I don’t really feel they got a deep emotional Groot going, which I can accept from a CGI plant that only says 3 words. Yes, I know he expands his vocabulary a bit, but it still doesn’t allow for depth. I like Groot and all, but his character doesn’t feel developed.

I feel we absolutely got this in the first movie. New Groot was just a cutesy sidekick in the second movie and is now obviously just a guy in a suit that looks like he belongs in Doctor Who and was clearly made that way so he can hang out at the Disney parks.

Yeah, I’m not a fan of Swole Groot.

When Quill is floating through space and his face swells and starts to break apart.

Yeah that felt completely unnecessary. I honestly thought we might lose Quill when he was just dying, but as soon as he started expanding I knew they weren’t going to kill him that gruesomely.

So when Groot said, “I love you guys” was it that he said something new or the audience was now somehow able to understand him the way that some of the characters can?
