Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Seen it Thread (no spoilers in OP)

Spoiler free brief thoughts.

I really liked it quite a bit. It’s the best MCU movie since Spider-Man. Maybe 15 minutes too long but I felt emotional by the end. I think I would have been content if the MCU ended with Endgame and they just had Spider-Man and this as epilogues.

It was emotional. a few comedic bits seemed to go on a bit long and could have been trimmed for time but I’m not complaining; given this is the last storytelling with this iteration of the Guardians I was fine with the extra time spent with the characters.

the only real fridge thought I’ve had so far would be the final fate of the High Evolutionary.
I respected that Rocket didn’t off him at the end, but are we to assume that (as was said to Warlock earlier) “everyone deserves a second chance” and he was carried safely off the exploding ship? That would be more consistent than “We won’t shoot you in the face but we will leave you to die”. Did I miss a background shot of him being carried onto Knowhere?

I’m also a bit curious what this really means for seeing “Star-Lord” in the future. I suppose it could be another character taking up the role or an Multiverse version, or perhaps Quill will join Avengers or whatnot rather than return to the Guardians..

One of only three movies I’ve cried at. Managed to keep the tears in (barely) during the escape. And when Rocket went to the ship I was, “Don’t you cry, Rocket.” but yeah the tears started when his did. and when Floor and Teeths came up I lost it.

As for the whole movie, it is easily in the top 3 Marvel Universe movies of all-time. The way they resolved storylines … . The way they honed in on family is who we choose … . Just perfect.

More likely Thunderbolts.

However this cast shakes out in future films,I hope we see more adventures with Drax and Mantis. I know it’s basically a dumb and dumber teamup, but there’s a lot of nuance to it.

Wow, I actually had tears in my eyes during several scenes, something I was not expecting!

I was also quite surprised at how gory a bunch of scenes were! Especially two near the end caused several reactions of “Oh my God!” from my audience.

Yeah, when the mask came off I had to look away.

I gotta wonder how many pet-lovers will be recruited to the MCU fan base with this one. My money is on a Disney+ Cosmo series by the end of next year.

Yeah saying I “got emotional” was my lame way of not admitting my eyes teared up at times near the end.

I’m actually disappointed that there are only 8 posts in this thread. I can’t believe more Dopers haven’t seen this so why the lack of replies?

Difference between Marvel Universe and DC Universe
MU emotional climax: We cry over 3 CGI characters we have never seen before this movie. Some of us cried multiple times.
DCU emotional climax: “Martha! Why d’ja have to say, Martha!”

I’m in for that. Even if it’s just some five-minute shorts like the (tooth-achingly adorable) I Am Groot shorts.

That was significantly more baby animal torture and genocide than I was expecting. They kinda glossed over the whole ending an entire civilization part, specially after we got to meet a couple helpful ones. Sadly we are not likely to get any Mantis/Drax team ups, Bautista is on record saying this is it for him, Zoe Zaldana also.

Saw the movie yesterday, liked it better than # 2, but not as good as # 1 (which is a hard one to top). Rocket’s backstory was a legit tearjerker, and I’m very glad we finally got to see it. I don’t think we’ve ever seen a more cold-hearted villain than the High Evolutionary. Despite the darkness inherent in the story, there was enough humor to enjoy (“I would have liked a Zargnut.” “Too bad, they’re all gone. (Crunch, crunch)”), though the “Cosmo bad dog” think was stretched out a bit much. Nebula telling Drax that his nature is to be a dad had me choked up as well. Quill’s use of Groot to escape from the ship was brilliant.

On the downside, I do wish the Ravagers (i.e., the original Guardians team from the comics) had a bigger role to play, and I was disappointed to see so little depth from Adam Warlock. The High Evolutionary’s people all turning on him after he declares that there is no god came out of nowhere. And I could have done without the goriness of actually seeing his skinned face.

“Star Lord will return” - does this mean that Chris Pratt has committed to Disney, while none of the others have? I guess he really likes the role.

I thought it was an hour too long and I didn’t like all the (fake) animal torture. It was kind of a tearjerker – they were basically saying, you will cry here, and we’ll extend this scene long enough to make sure.

I feel like I missed some important movie between Endgame and this one, or maybe I forgot then end of Endgame. When did the ravagers and Guardians move into the giant skull? When did Gamora come back to life, but with no memory of the Guardians?

She’s from the pre-Guardians timeline that invaded Earth at the end of Endgame. So she’s also half a decade or more younger than the Guardians’s Gamora would have been.

Thanks! I guess I forgot that part.

I wonder how many frames of this movie had zero animation.

At some point between Endgame and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special on Disney+. There’s no story behind it, they simply mention that the Guardians bought the place.

She’s Gamora from her pre-Guardians past, she came to the Avengers’ present with past-Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, so she never experienced life with the Guardians. Some sort of alternate-timeline versions, I guess, though I wish they had concluded Endgame in a way that didn’t involve a paradox, e.g., sending Thanos et al back to the correct point in the past with no memory.

Don’t worry. Hulk hand waved that all away.

Ah, that’s right (about Gamora).

I can’t believe the Holiday Special is canon. Too bad I missed it.

It’s even referenced in the second post credit scene.
