So a friend of mine showed me link that makes me want to give up on the internet now so figured I would share it all with you and see if I really should get rid of it or am just listening more to my tin hat then anything.
Even if the House passes it, I don’t see it making it through the senate.
It passed 19-10 with some democratic support, so a filibuster proof majority wouldn’t be impossible. And very few politicians are courageous enough to be seen as ‘pro-pedophile’, which is what they will be labeled if they do not support this massive invasion of privacy of the 99% of the public who are not pedophiles (and the 1% who are, although I assume actual pedophiles would cover their tracks and know how to surf anonymously). You would assume actual pedophiles would be very computer saavy and already use tons of tools to avoid detection of their activities. This law would likely just target ordinary people and store their info, which as history has shown, it is near impossible for anyone to hack into a network full of people’s personal info and use that info for illicit purposes. cough. Plus the US government has shown that it values transparency and values the good of the citizens more than corporate interests, so there is no risk at all to the public of this info being abused in secret, stolen or handed over to corporations with money to burn on lobbyists.
So the gov wants to track all our online activities while cracking down hard on whistleblowers like wikileaks. That is insulting.
FWIW, tons of child pornography is sent through the mail. If we just let the government scan, read and store everything sent through the mail we can curb child pornography too. 99.9% of all mail has nothing to do with child porn, but meh.
And lots of child porn is stored in people’s homes on CD-Roms. If we give law enforcement the ability to search everyone’s homes whenever they want and search all the hard drives, books and storage media w/o probable cause, we can cut down on child porn too.
Stupid fucking country. Its no wonder the Chinese are kicking our asses.
Gotta love the name of the bill:
Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act of 2011
Who could say no to that?
I wish I could be angry on your behalf, but we’re being screwed over twice as hard by the EU. (2 years - and we’re not even a member in the damn thing.)
